As many of us have either got, or would seriously like, some of the tasty brake upgrades that are available, it's got me thinking of unsprung weight of such upgrades. Has anyone any experience of this? Can we have our cake and eat it? = better AND lighter brakes??

I upgraded the front brakes on my Griff recently. Old standard discs and calipers were 6kg..new 300mm discs and 4 spot calipers were 5.8kgs. The extra weight of the larger discs negated any gains from the lighter calipers.

I don't have the actual weights but upgraded the standard Wedge brakes to HiSpec 4 pots with vented and grooved discs. The box of old discs and calipers weighed twice as much as the box of new parts and the braking is superb now that the 4 pot pads have bedded in. "Cake and eat it"? Definitely!

Discs *and* calipers? That's *very* light, even allowing for 2-piece discs.

240 mm Ford discs (pre-'96 non-500s) alone weigh 4.3 kg. The calipers (without carrier) weigh 3 kg each.
260 mm Ford discs (500 and later models) weigh 5.3 kg and the calipers are heavier than those of the earlier cars.

295 x 25.4 mm AP rotors weigh 5.x kg on their own, without bells...

I did try to find where I had written it down...maybe my memory is fading (along with everything else). Happy to stand corrected.
