Last two bottles were a bit of a struggle, on our current corkscrew (the type with two levers) the screw itself is too short for vintage port and the corks broke up. I know there are masses of different types on the market so am seeking recommendations.

Cheers

I always like a Waiter's Friend style corkscrew. You use the metal beer bottle opener part as a lever.

Can be as cheap as 99p or you can go fancy...

More leverage with a 2 step one like the Le Crueset above.

I broke the Le Crueset one but have replaced with a non branded one..

If the cork is fragile, try a 'butlers friend'.

Slightly tricky to use, but they have two prongs which you slide down between the cork and the glass and then ease the cork out.

You need a proper screw, as per the photo's above.

Many cork screws have a screw with a solid shank, if that makes sense. They trash fragile corks.

Get a proper waiters friend, and don't rush it.

The cork could have been resting for a number of years, it will not want to be removed from its tight hole.

I bought a 'butler's friend' as suggested above, thanks, and tried it today on a '92 Fonseca. Cork came out in one piece nicely though has to be said it was in better condition than some of the 80's vintage I had earlier this year.

The port is very nice, had a glass with a couple of home made mince pies and it was yummy.
