Forgive me if this has been raised before but I can't find a thread.

On the way home today I spotted one of the local constabulary driving toward me. He was steering with his right hand while using his left to operate the talking brooch attached to his right lapel. All looked a bit dodgy to me especially as rather than lift the microphone to his mouth he was adopting a Quasimodo pose so he could talk toward his right nipple.

You're not telling me this is safer than a mobile phone with a plain old wire mike/earpiece.

As far as im aware there are no exemptions yet for radio use. All cars (with in car sets fitted) i believe are fitted with remote transmit switches by the steering wheel for the in car set.

Ah, but the Police, even lowly constables in Panda cars go on a two week driving course that it better than any instruction available to us mere civilians. They are all better drivers than us even with only one hand on the wheel.

They choose to enforce a rule that they then choose not ton follow themselves. What do they expect ?

Merely poking fun at streetcop's assertions. Grow a thicker skin, gone. You're very good at dishing it out, so learn to take it.

Streetcop?
Has he made an appearance on this thread yet?

OK. I will learn to take it!
Maybe the next 24 years will see some improvement in my tolerance levels

IIRC there is an exemption for all radios like the ones the police use and cb radios for this exact reason,

ah yes, see q14 here

As much dislike posting this... Airwave radios (that we use now) are also mobile telephones. Thus they are fully covered by the legislation.

Dishing what out???
As far as im concerned the law does apply to all members of the public (and yes that does include police) But i think a defence of communicating with emergency services may come into effect.

Why is it that alot of people assume we dont use discression??? As i can pretty much say for sure that every motorist using a phone, exceeding speed limits et al have been shown discression from a real police person if they have been caught.

Remember gone we are sposed to be the nice police service. Always smilling and happy and believe everything everyone tells us as an excuse

They forget that it is a double edged sword

Driver to officer "Officer. Could you not posssibly use some discretion?" As the miscreant driver is awarded a yellow one!

Officer to driver " Sir. I am"

Ah yes! I remember a thread about this yesterday and a post from Autismuk about 'upsetting people nicely'.
The face of the modern corporate Police service

I'm not talking about your professional dealings with the public. I'm sure you carry those out with impeccable fairness and courtesy.

I refer to the occasional swipes at posters on here, which are sometimes undeserved.

And, the above post is a demonstration of the thin skin! I am not attacking the Police in general. I think that you traffic cops do a very good job in difficult circumstances. Fortunately, I have never (edit: so far) had the pleasure of meeting with you at the side of the road.

Some of the new radios...although in radio mode...do have mobile phone capabilities and therefore come under the mobile phone legislation.

This means that they are illegal to use on the move...

Consequently, if en route to a 999 call and you need to answer your radio (perhaps to give you an update as to where the offenders are, or whatever)..you must pull to the side of the road and then answer your radio.

Nevermind, the public want one rule for everybody....so that's what it must be...

Bollocks to that

Hear Hear..

However, there are many members of the public happy to 'bubble' you for using your hand held radio..

(of course, not if you were going to assist them, of course)

Must admit...most numpties dont even see my Volvo when they're speeding etc...let alone paying enough attention to see what i'm doing INSIDE the car..

Unless I'm picking my nose that is...then everyone seems to pay attention..

Back to the serious subject of the radios. If you have a collision whilst enroute to an incident and you are found to have been talking on your radio during the journey...you can bet your bottom dollar that will be used against you...
