So Manchester people, which is your favourite? We've got plenty of places open all day and night doing three curries and rice for around a fiver. My personal favourite is ThisNThat. Lamb on the bone, chicken and chick peas on a bed of rice for around a fiver. Kabana the next best.

What are your favourites?

I'm pleased to hear that ThisNThat is still around; haven't been there for a decade now but it was my favourite around there. Nice and hidden too!

The and that is the only one that I make a point of revisiting.

Worth popping into trof on the corner for a happy hour post-curry pint too.

I have to say though, its getting a bit expensive to go out round the NQ these days. Most places are pushing towards £5 a beer. Especially those new places down near tarrif street like pen and pencil. £4.90 for a pint of fking becks. Jokers.

Whilst we're on the subject of Manchester city centre curries, where do you all rate for a proper sit down meal? We normally go to spice lounge which is slightly above average without being ground breaking.

We're out for dinner with some friends tomorrow and I'm craving a decent ruby.

It's alright. I've been a few times over the last couple of years and I wouldn't rush back. That said, the poppadom chutneys were amazing!

Anyone been to ashas?

I was going to mention Asha's but haven't been. Seems expensive but the one in Birmingham seems to get quite a few positive reviews.

Two that I have been to a few times are Scene which has just opened towards the back of Spinningfields and Zouk just off Oxford Road. Both are very good.

I know what you mean, it does seem a tad excessive. Then again, I guess it is to Indian cuisine what tattu is to Asian.

I've heard good things about scene so I'm going to put it forward as an option!

I've been to Scene a couple of times. Food was good on both occasions. The tandoori grilled dishes are very good.

Looks like Asha's is the choice of the masses. Table booked for this evening!

Ashas is amazing as far as I'm concerned. It's even my Goan and Gujariti friends favourite restaurant when they come over and that's out of every restaurant they visit across the globe. Their chicken tikka is sublime

I'm sorry but you're not a PHer unless you order the £75 Emperor's Platter.

Swish place (as I knew it would be having originally tendered for the fit out project).

We started with the poppadums and chutneys. The poppadums were excellent but a couple of the homemade chutneys left a little to be desired. In particular, the spiced tomato ketchup (quite literally tasted of Heinz with some garam masala, chilli powder and chopped tomato) and apple chutneys were disappointing and nondescript.

To follow we shared the speciality kebab platter. This was faultless. I could go on and on about this selection but ultimately it came down to well spiced, well flavoured and well cooked meat & prawns. It wasn't cheap at £28 given the portion size, but each component was perfect.

For main course, I had the Muscat Gosht and a naan bread. Both of which were above average (although the lamb was a touch overcooked and hence wasn't as succulent as it should have been). My mate had the Murg Makhani which was excellent and pleasingly was made using thigh meat so the chicken stayed juicy and actually had some flavour. My fiancée had the boatman prawn curry and although nice, she felt it didn't quite hit the spot. I think mainly because it was similar to a thai curry and so wasn't what she was expecting. I tried it and thought it was well done. Our other friend had the Murg Jalfrezi and although I didn't try it, she declared it to be very good.

The whole meal came to about £190 including a couple of bottles of red.

I am a bit conflicted by Asha's if i'm honest. Parts of the meal were spectacular but set against others that were slightly disappointing. When you're paying that sort of money for a curry, you really do expect it to be spot on and in some areas, I found it lacking.

Would I go back? Yes, I would. I'd like to work my way through some of the side dishes paired with some of the tandoori offerings. Did it blow my mind? No, not on this occasion.

I'm dying to try Scene now though.

Thanks for the write up. I may try it but perhaps go for the more modest fixed priced lunch menu. Scene is definitely worth a punt though.

I sometimes got to This and That for lunch and I like it, but it's a bit of trek. I personally like Kebabish, up towards Piccadilly. Chicken tikka, two kebabs on a naan, plus spicy yoghurty sauce for £4.75. Can't go wrong.
