Why dose my e60 insist on changing back to D1 every time I start the car.

It's very annoying. You drive off and I always forget until 2 sec later when it's trying to change up 3 gears and we're lurching all over.

Can you make it default to manual or at least d2

Don't believe that you can default to manual but not sure why confused

If you select the slowest Auto setting then it will set off in D2 so you could try that?

I always knock the stick twice when about to pull away after starting.
It would be nice if you could default it to manual though.

However, SWMBO wouldn't like to drive it in manual, so it is probably for the best as is. She would just drive around town in 1st, not noticing all the noise...

I can live with it starting in auto but it always selects the slowest setting which is crap.

It's very annoying. When I first got mine, it would, like my CSL before start in whichever mode you left it last time it was turned off. Then there was a software update, probably in 2007, after which it defaulted to D1. That update also changed the display from M* for manual and A* for auto to S* and D8.

I have the M button set to default to manual, when I start the car I always press the M button and put it out of N... it also sets the seat up for me as well as gear change speed etc etc.

You can always do the opposite of what we do in the US and flash the North American SMG program into the car. tongue out

That way it will default to D2 on startup and you have the added benefit of horrible shifting.

We all flash the Euro version on to our cars because it makes shifting a little smoother when taking it easy and crisper when shifting in anger. Then we all complain about it starting off in D1.

That's what I do, along with pressing the power button.
Becomes second nature after a while and doesn't bother me.

I don't let my wife drive the car though! She'd probably burn the clutch out...
