My employer is considering installing driver facing camera in vans and 7.5t trucks. I don't really fancy the prospect of potentially being monitored in this way at work.

at the moment, all the vehicles are tracked, but don't have any cameras at all. I can see the logic in having forward and rear facing cameras, but driver facing too feels like a step too far.

I know the reasons for wanting to install the cameras, and I know that the fat controller wouldn't be sitting in his office watching 20 drivers picking their nose/scratching their balls/leering at women and all of the other things that make the job such fun. I just don't like the idea that I'm not trusted to drive defensively or that I'm likely to lie in the event of an accident.

That said, I assume my options are:

A: Suxk it up
B: Find another job

Nothing constructive to say, but I just wonder why they would want such a thing. If you crash, then you'd get the shock on your face. And the rest of the time, well, as you say the things that we do on our own whilst driving. Very odd.

If he crashes because he was doing something he shouldn't be, then the company can find out when reviewing the footage.

If the OP doesn't use the hand held phone, drink, eat, masturbate, or fall asleep at the wheel, and in doing so cause a crash, then I doubt he'll get in trouble.

If however he's accused of using a phone when simply wiping a spider off the side of his face, the video footage could be used in his defence.

They are doing it to either exonerate you (if you have done nothing wrong) or hang you out to dry.

The footage is only likely to be used if you have an accident so as long as you are not on the phone, eating a sandwich etc when you have a crash I doubt anyone will ever look at it.

I know and understand why they want to install the caneras. I think I'm just too old and secretive to tolerate it.

You have your choices then.
I'd expect lots of companies to be going this way though.
And when asked the why do you want to leave your current employer a better answer than what you've said above might be in order.

At my place of work there are forward and rear cameras, only ever been used to exonerate drivers so far where otherwise wouldn't have been able to.
I'd keep that in mind if I were you.

Forward, rear and side would be fine. I don't fancy interior cameras.

Not really. It's a bit irrational, if I'm honest. I choose to do the job I do because I enjoy my own company. I'd feel I wasn't alone, somehow.

I think the issue is that the company has grown rapidly in the last couple of years, and is struggling to find good drivers. The accident rate has increased beyond belief, and it tends to be the newer starters. It feels as though we're all being tarred with the same brush.

I'm not perfect, by any stretch of the imagination. I've whacked a couple of mirrors, taken a step off on a boulder in the verge, and the like. I've not run up the back of a queue of stationary traffic or punted a car up a motorway embankment like a couple of my colleagues.

It's a couple of months away yet, and it's only a suggestion at the moment. Let's see if I still have my principles and convictions when the spring comes around. I might have had a stupid accident by then, and find it hard to justify my resentment.

Something else to consider, along with telematics cameras are fast becoming industry standard, not expensive, reduce at fault claims (certainly have for us) etc. Unless you change career, is this something you're going to have to face at some point?

Suggest the boss has a ceiling mounted camera pointing at his desk all day.
If it's good for the goose....

Indeed. This has been a career change of sorts, and I've loved it for the last couple of years. For what I do, the money is good and the hours suit me very well. It would be a shame to give it up, but I doubt I'd find another driving job that I enjoy as much as this one.

He's not crashed his desk in the last couple of years. He also doesn't seem to mind people seeing him scratch his balls.

There is a huge shortage of drivers so there's bound to be another employer looking for reliable and experienced drivers.
