My pressure sender/transmitter is up the spout!

Had a talk to Rimmer brothers and they seem to think its the 0-100psi version serial number DRC 242 (my gauge does read 0-100psi).

Had a look at the pics for the 0-60 and the 0-100 psi units and they both look different to the unit I have on my car at the mo.

My transmitter looks longer with a rounded end (ooh-er!) and a single wire held down with a wing nut.

Is the DRC242 an incorrect part or are these simply direct bolt on replacements for the original unit but in a different housing?.

The units are specific to the instrument manufacture that made your pressure gauge. There are many different types so it is importent to check.

The sender in my 91 400se is a VDO unit to match the dials. I dont think a rover unit will work.

I thought mine was misreading but had so much trouble finding a sender I bought a mechanical unit and T'd it in to the original mount and have this a another indicator under the bonnet by the battery.

When you open the bonnet for normal maintaninece then you can check the real pressure.

As it turned out the original was only about 3 psi out !

Would it be safe to assume that I have VDO's as well??. The 450se I have would probably be one of the last few made.

Tried to contact merlin this morning and got no answer.

Had a reply from Demon Tweaks, they said:-

'I'll make an educated guess that it is 1/2 unf

I have spoken to vdo and they do not have a model specific listing so you will have to take the sender unit out and check the part nos on it.

If no nos are shown then please confirm thread size and what the pressure reading in bar that is stamped on it.'

Somebody must have sourced a sender from someplace that works....? - Otherwise it looks like I will have to get the spanners out.

The plot thickens....

Merlin Motorsport reckon that they have VDO gauge senders in stock but they have two types one from 0-75psi or the other that reads 0-150psi.

But they stock senders for Smiths instruments for 0-100 psi....

The thread in the oil pump cover is 1/2 unf and the thread on the VDO sender that is fitted to my car is 1/8 npt witch has a thread adapter to fit it to the cover. all parts available from Europa specialist spares who were very helpful when I spoke to them.

VDO gauges are German - I think that the thread will be Metric.
The thread on my VDO sender was M10 X 1.0. The tap cost me about £7.00 back in the 80s.

Additional info.

NPT is a taper thread (it gets narrower the further in) which makes sense for an oil pressure gauge.

1/8 NPT has 27 threads per inch (M10 has 25.4). Effective large diameter = 0.37 inches which is close to 9.4 mm. M10 core diameter is effective 9.03 which over a short length will probably fit.

You should use PTFE tape if it feels at all loose.

Always wrap PTFE so that it tightens up when fastened. Hold the tape on top with your ritht thumb, the roll in your left hand then turn the sender clockwise winding the tape tightly without stretching it about 3 to 5 times round before tearing it off and then introducing to the hole. Ensure that no bits of the tape cover the hole or could come off into the engine and block oilways.

Can't see it as a TVR 'special' myself, more likely from and odd part bin someplace - but which one?

Another thought, presumably the sender earths itself via the thread by putting loads of tape around the threads could this cause possible earthing issues?

Had a look at the Europa website as well and they indeed sell VDO senders but these are rated at 0-150 & 0-75 odd PSi gauges.

But mine as you can see from the picture is 0-100.

Jeff one of the many pipes that need changing!

Anyhow, I reckon that I got Smiths 'cobra' gauges in my chugaboom and not VDO. The sender then is a Smiths compatible 0-100psi version.

The difference being the Smiths are turned 90 degrees (read bottom to top) with a TVR logo on them??? and the VDO are left to right????.

I think they may well be early Griff/V8S units if that is any help.

Used them as they had them lying around at the time rather than order another special set.
