Allow me to do a short demonstration of why people switch to Firefox and ad blockers:

IE:

What the actual fk is that? Honestly? I see the case for advertising, but that's ridiculous. Why bother with classified content at all? Its not like anyone can concentrate on it!

Firefox:

Is it any wonder the wider industry believes banner advertising is dead....

I never see any of this and I'm on vanilla IE.
Must be one advantage of living in a 3rd world country...

hehe

You're lucky. With your bandwidth, ads like that would bring the whole country to a stop.

Chrome seems to filter out this with or without adblock enabled.

Obviously advertising is an important revenue as with any publication whether it be digital or print however we are listening to the feedback you give regarding the site and working to ensure that they adverts do not become too intrusive to those that visit the site or spoil their experience.

Are you? People have been complaining about this sort of thing for at least six months, if not a year or more.

Even where the adverts aren't intrusive, their servers are SO SLOW that they make reading PH a chore, let alone contributing (and it is the members contributions which make PH, not the tiny amount of 'editorial').

Those page skins will be far more profitable than the usual formats, doubt they will be going anywhere soon. Obviously I don't see them as I block them - despite working in digital advertising. Page Skins drive me mad.

It's short-termism at best. As you say, adverts taking over at what is causing a lot of people to turn to ad-blockers. So well done to the companies who completely fail to strike a balance (like PH), as more and more people will either not see them at all, or just stop using the site.

Too intrusive? They take up two thirds of the screen! How you are supposed to focus on the content is beyond me.
