Well it seems the market has simultaneously exploded and imploded since I last looked, and disappeared up its own singularity.
I have an old 60" Kuro monitor in the lounge which is very nice, but I could get away with something a little larger, and it'd also be nice to have something a little more flush with the wall - seven years ago it was state of the art, but I suspect the game has moved on a little and I know certainly the cases are smaller.
Likewise in the kitchen I have a Panasonic 55"VT30 which was bought in a rush when we were renovating without much thought to size or fitting - it's lovely and neat and whilst it's certainly not a patch on the Kuro but then it cost a fraction of the price. It's a decent enough picture. I do think however we could get away with something a little larger...
So in having a quick hunt around and thinking of 65" tellies, I'm immediately confused - lots for none at all, and some for lots, with little inbetween. I nearly picked up a £900 Panasonic thing in the Amazon sales until I hit on a review berating it for not actually being Panasonic anyway. Grrr.
I assume there's no way of having a nice plasma any more and it has to be retina-melting choppy / teary LED and nothing else?

By the way you say a VT30 is 'nice' considering it was the best on sale once Pioneer stopped producing TVs. Absolutely do not buy even the best of LCD/LED TVs, you will be sorely disappointed.
If you can I'd hold off for the next generation of OLED TVs, the technology is still in its infancy so the models are progressing quite quickly. Saying that the current LG OLED TVs are by no means bad, and should at the very least top your now ageing Kuro, for black-white at least. Not sure on motion reproduction.

Blacks are way better than my Panasonic plasma. They're completely, perfectly black. The room is plunged into total darkness on a black screen. Yeah, but a Panasonic was never better than a legendary Kuro. I did say an OLED would be better for it though, because black is actually black. The reason you think it's turned off, is because it is. Or at least the panel is off.Poor advertising, high cost, inability to make them as thin as LCDs, didn't compare well in big box stores (not as bright as LCD), higher power use than LCD, general public scared of screen burn etc.
OLED is the true successor, but it currently has the price premium of a new technology. Worth the extra? I'd say so.

Not that it adds much to this topic, but I have the LG55EF950V Flat, 4k OLED (65 inch just would not fit in my room) and if you really care about image quality it's the only way to go. I can't help thinking that any LED is going to be a big dissapointment after a Kuro. I have heard rumours that Currys (apparent) monopoly on the flat OLEDs ends at Christmas, perhaps prices will drop then.
A £900 Panasonic LCD is never going to get anywhere near a Kuro.
If you want comparable quality and a 65" screen, you'll need to spend c.£4k on a LG 960 OLED or Samsung JS9500.
You really need to go check these sets out though... Non-Plasmas have really moved on in the last year or 2... no tearing, no smearing with fast movement, plus superb colour and brightness.. yes they will look silly in Currys with everything on max, but get them home, get them properly calibrated, and they look amazing.

I just bought a Samsung JS9500 and have been really impressed with it. I did look at the OLEDs but there are still too many issues that need to be ironed out, in my opinion. The yellow/pink "stains", banding and crosstalk on 3d has put me off.If you get a good set though, it's amazing.
The Samsungs blacks are excellent and I dont watch TV in pitch black (I have a bias light behind which I really find useful) where OLED would be slightly better. I like the separate connect box too so its easy to upgrade if technology changes in the next couple of years.

Agreed that new Oled Panasonic is superb after looking around recently, don't really want a curved tele. Kept the Kuro in the lounge, VT in our bedroom. Wife went nuts.....
Even AVForums admits the Panasonic isn't worth the money over the LG.
Please don't say you're using a Kuro without an audio system as well... But even if you are, you'll need to stop that now because high end TVs don't worry about sound quality, because their target market doesn't use them.
