Correct Oil Grade for 4.0HC???

My Farther and I are doing a service on his Chim, the previous owner consistently put 0w-40 Mobil 1 in which is fine for the running in stage but a very nice man from Demon Tweeks said that 10w-40 would be far better but I am quite confused, also should we be using Fully Synthetic on such a old engine as i would have though part synthetic would be better, what does anyone else use??

Car is used mostly on normal roads maybe occasional track day also long drives ie to France

How long have you got? There must be at least one opinion per owner, and it does very much depend on what you are doing with the car and how much credence you give to the zinc issue.

Absolutely perfect, and sensible money Penrite HPR 10. Personally I think the HPR 15 is a bit to heavy for RV8 after a couple of years use.

If it really is going to be used for trackdays (as mine occasionally is), you cant go wrong with Fuchs Silkolene Pro R 15W50 (what I now use) or Motul 300V Comp in the same grade - cant easily get it in 4L packs though. Any 0W oil is way too thin. Not sure what running in you refer to, but I wouldn't be using Mobil 1 for that.

Thanks the car has around 38k on the clock, 1 owner so can be proved. Sounds like anything above 0 is fine, but i was advised that 0w is too think for cold starting.

Wrong way around- 0 grade is the thin oil end - 40 grade is the thick end, so a 0 grade is great if you use the car in very low temperatures as its still nice and runny. Thinner oils do release more power but oil pressure could be a problem when the engine gets hot and also oil consumption tends to be worse the thinner the oil.

I will be driving my car all winter on dry days (purely a safe grip issue) and will be doing loads of track days from March to September, and I don't go lower than 10 grade. For track day safety I use 60 grade at the top end as my car gets very hot. And fully synthetic in my case. But I am ploughing a solo furrow here I think.

A good 10 or 15 w 50 should suit you well IMHO

Oh dear the good oil what oil should I use debate , well actually it doesn't matter as long as it's good quality, I'd sad say 20/50 vrl synthetic , penrite is another good one, the fact is its a old engine design , so pays your money and takes your choice , either way it will not lock up and sieze !!

I have tried all versions and to be honest couldn't tell the difference !!

You do have to ask the question why did the TVR engines eat its camshaft so easily when Mobile one was recommended as the ultimate oil? Lack of zinc certainly did not help whatever the viscosity.

I'm close to an oil change too,, as Blitz just pointed out the zinc content,,,
Can anyone recommend a good 10W/40 semi synth that's got a high Zinc content,,

Road based car doing short/long journeys stop start,, like an everyday car but might find itself being asked on the odd track day

Check out either valvoline VR1 or the penrite oil have good zinc content , look at the penrite premium brand
