From the BBC

Several people were arrested when the final Waterloo Cup hare coursing event began at Altcar, Merseyside, on Monday.
Dozens of coursing enthusiasts were forced back by mounted police as they tried to clash with protesters.

A dismembered hare and a firecracker were among the missiles thrown at anti-blood sports protesters.

The three-day event was planned for next week, but was brought forward to avoid the impending ban on hunting which becomes law from Friday.

Police on horseback

About 200 demonstrators marched to the event banging drums, sounding air horns and carrying banners and placards.

Hundreds of spectators stood behind wire fences and shouted abuse at the protesters.

A hare's head and dismembered body was thrown at the demonstrators, along with mud, bottles, empty cans and a firecracker.

The protest was policed by more than 50 officers, including several on horseback.

At least two pro-hunting spectators were led away in handcuffs by police.

The event, which once attracted crowds of 75,000 and started in 1836, used to run in tandem with the Grand National.

Anti-hunt campaigners had said they would mount a peaceful protest to highlight why Parliament made the sport illegal.

In the event, highly trained greyhounds are tested for speed and agility as they chase a brown hare across a field.

BBC correspondent John Thorne said that its thousands of supporters thought of hare coursing as a "fine old traditional countryside activity".

But opponents claim it is cruel and barbaric, he added.

They argue that a blood-thirsty minority enjoys being entertained watching terrified hares running for their lives and some being brutally torn apart.

The final Waterloo Cup is expected to attract more than 10,000 supporters.

Story from BBC NEWS:

Dismembered hare? Firecracker?

Civilisation at it's best.

And them hares are a right pest that need exterminating at all cost

The aim is not to kill the hare, it is to test the skills of the dogs against each other in their chasing of the hare.

You can't judge a group of people by the actions of a very small minority - are all Muslims terrorists?

Greyhounds + chips + beer + fake bunny = entertainment for thousands.

Add a real hare that doesn't harm anyone = sick.

I could demonstrate my skill in disembowelling live POWs - doesn't mean it should be done.

FYI the hare nearly always gets away - not much to touch hares for speed and agility. Rabbits are a different story - stupid animals and whippets more than capable of out running and out-turning them.

I suppose you're going to tell me rabbits aren't a pest either.

That just makes it worse.
At least the fox hunters try to excuse themselves by claiming they are on some pest control mission.

Over-ripe human morality at it's worst.

We're not the only species on this earth that takes pleasure in the killing of other animals.

But we can moralise about it!

I'm not fussed one way or the other about such things anymore. Once upon a time I would have been vehemently anti blood sports. Now, I am more concerned about personal freedoms being constantly eroded by an ever interfering government.

I await your tears and wailing as you walk past Sainsbury's, KFC, McDonalds, the local butchers etc. tonight (actually, the local butcher's is probably a bit too gory for you people who don't like to admit how nature works).

Hope you're not wearing leather shoes, and make sure you don't squash those bed bugs tonight.

Whats to know? Two big dogs (not one mind you, but two) let loose on one hare in a field rigged so the hare cant get out.
Now let me see? what am i missing here? Oh! Yes! Pikeys! Lots of moolah changing hands on whether the hare will get "proper fed" or whether itll escape (by some miracle) to the amusement of a baying crowd........
Forgot something?...erm yep! Viscious baby eating sods these hares are....i once saw one knock the living shit outa Mike Tyson as well....box ya say? Oh yes! They can go at least 37 rounds...Wipe em all out i say! Now!
Is that about the size of it?

Ps. Arent we supposed to be above such things by now?

Chimpanzee's chasing and killing small monkeys, large Wasps killing whole colonies of Bees, Killer Whales playing with seals, large cats catching live prey for their cubs to train on, domestic cats playing with live mice & birds before killing them.....loads.

What they actually take "pleasure" in that? How you know?

Yet more evidence that these activities will continue unaffected once the ban is in place, as the more ostrich inclined pro-hunters insist. Clearly the reason the event was brought forward.

See there are still some of us who equate their intelligence to that of animals. Thankfully there are some who have passed that level to guide them in the right direction.

Thats a very persuasuve argument, better put aside my considered opinion on that basis.

Chimps chasing other primates, territorial behaviour.
Wasps, same thing.
Whales probably mating ritual, presents.
Cats catching prey for their cubs to train on, answered it yourself there.

Domestic cats still catch prey, instinctive, food.

All of those can be put down to nature. In nature there is no time for fun, life is too hard.

I was going to mention the killer whales but you beat me to it mate!

I couldn't really give a tosh either way really. What does it matter if they die for food or for pleasure? The fact is they still die.

If you bothered to check the rule book of any coursing club you would see that fields are not "closed" - when the hare gets away, the hare gets away.

Not my cup of char, but if people want to do this sort of thing then its a free country.
Wild animals i'm afraid to say very rarely die peacefully in a leafy glade surrounded by Bambi and thumper; instead, if they are lucky they are killed quickly by a predator, if they are unlucky they'll beome too old to feed themselves and eventually starve, or as is most often the case they'll become injured, and either die of the infection or slowly starve to death. The world is not a happy clappy fluffy place and no amount of hand wringing and moral soul searching will make it so. Personally I can't see the pleasure in hunting, but then again i can't see the pleasure in a lot of things, doesn't mean they should all be banned imo.

So what's you stand-point then Dave? Didn't read any contribution to the argument from you in that post. (correct me if I'm wrong though)

By the way, the next time you swat a fly I'll be straight round with a flame thrower.
