Sand blasted on ride

Took my daughter out on her new bike yesterday, riding back along the seafront & the wind picked up blowing sand across the road so hard it hurt on bare skin!
When we rode on my bike was making a helluva noise from the BB area, we were 11mls from home so I emptied a water bottle over the chainset to clear some sand & rode on.
It helped & the noise almost disappeared, got home & scrubbed both bikes with citrus cleaner & Muc Off before re-lubing.
Went out again today & bike seemed fine, was it sand that caused the problem? It's an Argos Ventura CP50 with square taper BB (will upgrade to 105 in spring).
