Been injured since Feb this year, was trying for a 3:15 however that dream seems to be becoming more difficult. Just had another stab at it today and the injury seems to have returned after a decent early summer.

Summer PB was 3:24

Massages, physio, acupuncture all seem to offer temporary respite.

Injury seems to be concerned with pain in my left thigh which generally moves up towards my lower back which then becomes painful. At the moment i have my laptop on my legs and the pain is just above my knee on the outside in my thigh. It seems to hurt in the higher part of my thigh.

A mile in 3mins 24seconds sounds fairly respectable...

Collapsing / bruised spinal disc, applying pressure on the nerve? I'd say an injury lasting that long is probably due a visit to the GP who can refer you to someone who knows what's what.

I would suggest it's more likely to be an inflamed muscle applying the pressure. Serious anti inflamatories, and a programme of core stability perhaps?

3:15 for what? I had read it as a marathon? Ho Hum.

You have developed a chronic injury because you've not rested for long enough. What course of action d'you think someone sensible (i.e. not a determined runner) would take?

That is the annoying thing. It seems i can run medium - longs ok (10m-14m) pacing well. Couple of weeks ago i did 10m in 63 which was a PB in the city of London.

Inflamatories you say and core work. Right then lets get started tonight.

Have your Physio appointments given you a definite diagnosis? If not, then my first step would be to find a decent sports physio who can do that for you, or refer you to the appropriate expert.

See a doc, knock the running on the head in the short term, do some compound exercise and core work with low impact cardio like cycling, but seriously see a doctor before doing anything else.

I usually use a bike for commuting (15 miles each way). Which seems to help ease it a little. Perhaps it is the circular rotation in that area (glute, hip, back of thigh) and the lack of impact that helps.

During lunch, I run between 10k and 10miles depending on time & schedule and whether i am fit or not. At the moment i am not sure i can run 3 miles!

In the evenings, 3/4 times a week i am in the gym working on my back/chest/arms and not really experienced any other injuries that i could say i was concerned by another area (e.g. back).

Out of 10 marathons this year i can say that i have only ran 3 well with a win in a local half marathon.

If you don't take a rest now you'll have to take a much longer rest later.

Need to get this fixed. The run at lunch nearly had me on the floor. Did 2 miles and was agony.

Might try some stretching and foam rolling tonight.

My advice:
STOP Running
Get a professional diagnosis
Get it sorted properly

I was out for over 2 years with an injury due to trying to keep going on rather than sort it properly.

I suggested the inflamed muscle because that's what happened to me. I ended up in hospital one summer night in tears due to the unrelenting pain.
I was really lucky - I went to the local GP, where they had a locum - very young, and straight away he sad it was a sports injury, and prescribed Diazapane, some other anti inflamatories, and codine for the pain.
2 weeks later it was much much better, and I could run again.
I concentrated more on stretching and core, and it's been (nearly) OK ever since. I hate stretching, so I tend to climb (indoor) to do the same job for me with more fun.

The injury cost me 6 months training and competition, a place in the national team v home nations, and a European championship place. Wish I had gone to the locum earlier.

I still think I was very lucky though, as normally the GP would be very dismissive / non understanding of sport injury.

Mind you, it does sound like you are over doing it a bit (IMOP)

Judging by the way i am having to do a moonwalk to the toilet, i am going to have to start with resting and stretching.

Damn it.
