Ok guys. After several days of scouring both my small mind and the vast net I am stuck for ideas on what to get my little boy for his first birthday. Toys and clothes are out (we are having a birthday party for him with 350+(!) guests so it would be a waste) so I want to get him something that he will be able to keep for a long time. Any ideas welcome and all help is appreciated. BTW we bought him a rocking horse for Chrismas so thats out too.

What about a St. Christopher. My Mum bought me one when I was very small. Granted I did not wear it until I was older but I reckon it's kept me safe in my er... Enthusiastic appliance of the right foot !

my sister bought me a St. Christopher when I turned 18, to this day I've never worn it (and if the truth be told I don't know what I've done with it now), but it's still there.

Hows about a nice bottle of Port? My nephew got one (from me) for his Christening...

A share in a race horse or a vineyard, any income can be invested for him until he's eighteen.

Pair of overalls. As soon as he is capable of 2 legged progress, he should be a good spanner fetcher, assuming you are proper petrolheads.

I think my first words were Ratchet and Thirteenmill

How about a fine ornament that he can treasure all his life, something as an investment that will be worth a fortune when he's 18. Something that will look amazing on his first mantlepiece when he leaves home?

I think I must've been similar - in fact I remember my Dad at one point getting me to crawl under the jacked-up 131M to retrieve a snapped timing belt. Felt really important! Must've been about 4 or 5.

As for a present? Well it's got to be something that he'll understand the significance of when he's come of age. St Christopher perhaps - depends on whether you think it's a cliche or not. What about a really nice watch, I mean something even you wouldn't wear every day, like an Swiss Aviator, a Patek Phillipe or a Wemke.
