Range Rover Classic....what to do?

I bought this two years ago, the previous owner was bit of an "enthusiast", various things need changing, haven't got round to so far:

Numberplate: under the reg No it says "3.9 V8 power"......it's gotta go

Alloys: I have a set of original refurbed alloys going on this week

Exhaust: I quite like the look of the four outlets but hate the noise, its far too loud and just drones everywhere. Hopefully can keep the back and quiten the rest of it down.

"Autobiography" stickers: these are on the tailgate and also clear ones on the wood door sills


Whoever bought this new must have ticked every option, for a 1991 car to have a heated windscreen, electric powered seats, and aircon that actually works (its been changed to take modern gas". It has the walnut picnic tables in the rear that are superb.

I sort of use it as a daily driver, alas my nearest LPG is 8 miles away and a pain to get to so often use petrol at 12mpg. Ideally I want it to be as near original as possible, so do I put a standard exhaust on it or try and mongrel the existing set up with more silencer boxes?

Mine also has almost every option :

Heated front screen - which does'nt work
Electric seats - which sort of work
Heated seats - Don't work
Upgraded radio from a Rover sterling with bass bin - nope, no worky
Sunroof - Dare not open it.
Electric windows - can't open the pass side front or it falls into the door
Remote central locking - only locks 3 doors, then pops up because the 4'th lock won't go down
Alarm - Only goes off if you try and put the key in while the alarm is set, noise is akin to a small mouse farting into a baked bean tin
Air suspension - WORKS ! but only if you slam the drivers door really hard.
Climate control - only works on fan setting 3 with all air to windscreen , Air con works but only only one setting, fking cold.
Handbrake light - works but also lights up most of the dashboard with it.

Out of interest, what are the mechanicals like?

You've had it 2 years and haven't bothered to change the number plates for legal ones? :-)

I like original but then is it worth spending a lot on it to get it there?

Make exhaust quieter, change number plates and remove/change other badges etc.. and just enjoy it.

Full on carlos fandango system, haven't found the cd magazine yet......yes |I looked under the passenger seat

works but doesn't park properly, also its had new headlining that sort of snags the sunroof

Remote central locking - only locks 3 doors, then pops up because the 4'th lock won't go down
Works OK except the "plipper" is also the immobilisier and the shank that connects it to a key ring is broken so I leave it in the car and just use the key for locking/unlocking
Alarm - Only goes off if you try and put the key in while the alarm is set, noise is akin to a small mouse farting into a baked bean tin
I killed it so no more noise
Air suspension - WORKS ! but only if you slam the drivers door really hard.
Happily is 1991 so has proper springs
Climate control - only works on fan setting 3 with all air to windscreen , Air con works but only only one setting, fking cold.
Again all good

Handbrake light - works but also lights up most of the dashboard with it.
Don't really use handbrake, feels dead weedy, but is probably a transmission brake

The real reason I haven't done the numberplates is that HR Owen were the original supplying dealer, so I would like some original old stylee plates with the HR Owen bit at the bottom. I went to the service dept and they cannot "retro" numberplates. I will find some backstreet place who will do it at some point but is v low on my "stuff I need to get sorted this week/last week" list so mea culpa I haven't done it

PS are they illegal.........its at the MOT shop as we speak

My CD changer is under a small flap at the right hand side of the boot.
Under the (factory fitted) amp and subwoofer!

Not bad , box works well , engine is tired and blows oil smoke higher up the Rev range , chassis is solid
