"2381 children killed crossing roads last year". I presume that's a part of the 3,500 road deaths? Are we sure that's correct -- it seems awfully high. Just shows the waste of time scamming NSLs if so.
They're talking about the "most dangerous road", as voted by children. Some sensible discussion on pedestrian crossing vs. speed cameras, but surely a bridge would be best of all? HA representative says the road is not a high priority, and that the survey was not the most scientific -- some sense there but he's portrayed as hard-hearted.

It talks about Britain's most dangerous road.... which one is it ?
Cat and Fiddle in Derbyshire? I drive that everyday and it eats bikers!
Bikers play on it
Nope, the A59 Harrogate to Skipton apparently. Though they did mention the A537, and one for pedestrians, the A456 near Birmingham.

Is that what they call it? I'd have said it was nearer to royal blue, but then you can't make much sense of colour names on cars.
In any case why the hell was he so concerned to stop somebody driving at - what was it - 65 mph? I've done 115 quite satisfactorily up that same stretch many years ago.
I reckon the A59 is a nice road. I don't know what all the fuss is about. All roads are 'dangerous roads' if you're going to drive like a complete tit.
BTW, good morning Gary.
Best wishes all,
Dave.

If I remember correctly it was 85. So 25mph over the limit...
Are you really saying you did 115 around a bend on a small A road?
I thought the program did quite well in saying that what's really needed is better road design. I think that thats a good way forward. I missed the beginning but after the Subaru pulled the speeder I heard no real mention of reducing speed limits...just improved design.

The guy who the cop stopped was doing 85mph I think.
There was somebody doing 65mph (which is shifting a bit on that road) which I think the Bib simply drove with for a bit.
115mph on that road is insane, whatever you drive !

It's the same here ; you can look at the roads and its obvious why they are dangerous ; blind bends with terrible junctions.
The A456 thing was interesting. The idea was it was uncrossable because of the volume traffic. I used to drive on it a lot 10 years ago, it was bad then and it hasn't been bypassed or anything so god alone knows what it is like now.
However, the scary thing was the highways mob suggesting Speed Cameras. As any fule kno, this will increase the traffic density.
This means that there are more cars per metre of road. Which means it's harder to cross because there are fewer gaps.
Duh !
It's a bit like Boyle's law. The speed of the traffic is inversely proportional to its density. If you halve the speed the density doubles - if the traffic levels don't drop.

If you're right I must have misheard what was said on the programme. Even so, I can't see that the guy in the red car needed to be stopped and ticketted.

It's not a small A road. It is a perfectly decent single carriageway A road, parts of which are suitable for quite high speed if you identify suitable conditions. The bit I was talking about is the 2 or 3 mile section from the river Wharfe travelling east towards Harrogate. This is a single carriageway 3 lane road with 2 lanes up and one lane down, separated by a double white line system. That section climbs steadily all the way from the river with some nice sweeping curves to it. Beautiful stuff in the right conditions, and 115 mph up that hill need not be a problem if you know what you're doing.
As for the general stance of the programme, I'm sorry but I do not agree that wholesale re-design of allegedly dangerous roads is the answer. If you take that approach the cost would be enormous, and you simply can not prevent people from having accidents by tackling the problem that way. They'll simply have their accidents elsewhere and by other means, so then what do you do? Initiate yet another huge and extremely costly programme of road improvements? There simply has to be a limit to that process.
If we were to concentrate official road safety policy on raising driving standards, drivers would then maintain a much better safety whatever type of road situation they were confronted with. Mistakes will still be made, and I'm not pretending otherwise, but they will tend to be much fewer and less serious.
Best wishes all,
Dave.

Nonsense. See my reply to munter.
Maybe we're talking about different bits of road. Incidentally, do you actually know that section of the A59, or are you simply basing your opinion on what was shown on the TV programme?

A59 stretch - Harrgogate/Skipton.... would not say that ist road you can really speed on - und there are dodgy bits. Are some nice fastish stretches on A59 - but this bit ist scenic - but very lethal at too high a speed. There ist
a sheer drop on on side of a narrow bendy bit - between signs for Bolton Abbey und sign for place called Blubberhouses.
Und bit of paint at a dodgy junction would improve it...
As for the Gatso suggestion by the school... the head said that
"A Gatso would only perhaps slow traffic down - but ist not a problem of speeding traffic, but one of traffic volume. A crossing would be more useful!"
A paper has been published which points out that the research into effectiveness ist of poor quality (I would not get a drug up to trials, let alone past trial stage if my research was on such dire quality und control). Yet they still hail a scamera as "the only means of improving road safety!"
Could not have any thing to do mit money givn "high volume of traffic?

Not *that* well but I've driven it a few times & I know the area. There are some decent bits ; however I don't think 115mph is a sensible speed on any road !

If you can stop in the distance you can see to be clear (and reasonably expect to remain clear) then the speed is irrelevant.
I did this speed last week (not on the road in question) and I didn't kill anone.

I'd say 115 is possibly an acceptable speed on a road with a physical barrier between the 2 carriageways. However on that road it would leave you with an impact speed of 230mph were you to have a blowout/gust of wind and find yourself face to face with someone also doing 115mph. As opposed to 120mph if you were doing the 60 limit.
I do take your point that you cannot engineer out all the dangers. But we dont appear to want to engineer out ANY of the dangers. Yes better driver education should ALSO be done. But humans are not perfect and make mistakes. Should we not try and help them avoid those mistakes by spending a few quid where it's needed.
After every fatal accident would it not be a good idea to have a report on the piece of road which would cover possible improvements. Sometimes nothing can be done, but if it's a case of repainting the faded lines, or a few cats eyes then you'd struggle not to justify it....

OK, so we disagree. You just take care with what you do, whatever it is, and I'll do the same.
