Has it always done this, anything changed around the time it started?

Dell provide a hardware diagnostic program for their systems, maybe your manufacturer has something similar?

Up-to-date anti-virus software and run something like Ad-Aware to scan for nasties.

Otherwise do what I did and buy new hardware. I managed to sell my old stuff on ebay for £135 and buy new stuff for £120! Tell me where the logic is in that!?!?!?

If it just stops and locks solid with no errors then memory is always a favorite place to start looking.

try memtest86 and see if show anything

Could be temp. related.

My PC started freezing recently,

Checked the temp of the CPU in the bios
(after it had been running for an hour) and noticed it was higher than normal.

Opened the case, cleaned and dusted
(The fans were quite dirty)

Used a can of compressed air (aerosol) to shift the dirt and a small hand held vacuum cleaner.

Take care when cleaning the inside
they are quite sensitive.

No more problems and CPU temp is back to normal.

I clean the system every couple of months

to echo the above comments check your temperatures - some systems simply shut down if the temps get too high
