As a teenage plane spotter many, many years ago (1978), I was with a bunch of mates down at Shannon Airport when due to a fuel strike at Heathrow, a load of diversions ended up at Shannon. We were looking into the cockpit of an Air India 747 and spotted the crew making preparations for departure. One of my mates said, "You can tell they're Indian. They're all wearing turbines".

Apparently it was a 'mishap' ??!!

Often wondered what would happen here, I take it that the engine gets destroyed ? If it can't handle a goose its not going to handle an Indian ?

Some of the Indians I had in the past have made me feel like I've got an afterburner on their way out...

It's gonna have an exhaust like a chewed orange after an Indian.

That engine must have been running above ground idle to have ingested a person,but the question is really, what the hell was he doing so close to a running engine?,even doing a manual start you never ever walk away from a running engine from the front never.The only solace is he probably didn't know an awful lot about it .Rip chap.

Apparently the pilot misread a signal from ground staff and throttled back.

Ok i can understand that to a degree but even so approaching a live engine from the front or back is as this chap found out a massive mistake.Boeing AMM 71 gives a 14ft radius at above idle,and 4 ft from the front of nacelle down the side of engine cowl.

The US navy guy survived because his cothign got hung up on a Pitot tube,the engine ate everything that was in his pockets. If it wasn't for the stitching on his overalls he'd have been minced as well.

Thankfully this seems very rare, pity the poor sods that have to deal with the aftermath.

I would imagine that engine will be repaired and returned to service, anyone confirm ?

I almost certainly think they would 'clean' it and send for overhaul/repair,as with most airlines they don't own the engine rather they lease them.

Straying from SOP's and running engines is a bad combination, start doing that regularly [and I know, having been the innocent party on the subsequent receiving end] and the countdown counter is started....

Yeah, grim but hopefully he didn't know much about it apart from "What the....", I should imagine that would be a fairly swift way to go.
