Hi After some advice. My swirl pot was not connected.i have removed it from the car .Is there a float in the swirl pot .As it sounds like a ball bearing rattling around in side .Small on the feed tube from the pump which can be repaired. Thanks Mike.350i S1

Hi mate...Its probably the mesh filter rattling about where it has broken loose...Might be why its disconnected....You can buy new ones....

Mike it will be the remains of the internal mesh filter rattling about... if you are going to do it then replace with a new one which are available but not cheap! Fit a low pressure filter between the swirl pot and the pump and a new high pressure one after the pump, all available - do it once and do it right is my motto!

Advisable to at least have a pre filter between tee/ swirl pot and pump, a bullet filter with cleanable gauze and a valve before it is useful, john

My 280i had a Tee piece instead of a swirl pot and every time the petrol was approaching a quarter of a tank and i turned left she would momentarily cut out...Also its more of a reserve than a swirl pot...To swirl it would need one in and one out both facing opposite each other and then the liquid would need to be forced from the bottom to swirl to the top...Like this..

RT have them and they are a little less expensive than ACT but they are what they are....

Someone on here cut one open..Mended it and welded it back up...Cant remember who and although it sounds a bit extreme..If it can be done then its worth doing!....Ziga

I would say a filter pre-pump and post injectors is good..As said with Delilah as regards to a swirl pot/Res

Ideally to filter pre-pump but if its deteriorated then it might be worth getting a pre-pump filter from RT ..It doesn't affect the running but it might start breaking up over time and causing problems...

Yep, it was me who cut one open. Basically to clean the resudue of 15 years. of crap. Inside was a build up of black sudstance and a small piece of metal mesh at the bottom over the outlet. Not really a swirl pot, just a small resourvour between the two tanks. Supposedly to stop fuel starvation during cournering of the fuel pump? Mine was not to badly corroded so was refitted but considering the capacity of the pot would have gone the route of a "T" piece between the tanks. However I did find a guy who would maufacture a tank at quite a reasonable cost, €60 ish. Further details if you want? Cheers John C.

Ive also cut one open, see below. Replaced with a new one from RT Racing, plus I installed a cleanable pre-pump filter.

Thanks, not had a starvation problem with the T piece, could be I have been lucky. A pre-filter is a good idea, I'll have to see about that.

Here I have an old leaking swirl pot opened posing with some stainless steel parts to make a new one:

As a resource I have used two kids toy kettles I bought from local IKEA wink

Here is a photo of how it looked like before I put it back to my superchargered 350i:

I did re-use the old filter after giving it ultrasonic clean-up.
