Advice needed regarding a foreign registered car
Discussion
Excuse the background story, but it requires some context, I'll try and be as brief as possible.
I own a holiday home in Ireland, if I brought a car for use over there, would I be able to bring it back to the UK for short periods, i.e. maintenance and general use for a few weeks at at time? I've tried doing some research and I can't seem to find anything specific, due to the fact I'm not in the country for 185 days each year, however I am a British National.
Can anyone clear this up as a friend of mine who's in the force believes I risk having the car seized and crushed under 'using and keeping an unlicensed vehicle & no test certificate'. Just to clarify the car would be registered at my home in Ireland, taxed and insured there.
Thanks

I believe that you are allowed to keep the car in the UK for six months from the day it crosses the border before you have to register it in the UK. If you remove it from the UK and bring it back, you get a fresh shiny new 6 months. There is no time limit on how long the car needs to be out of the country.
. http://findlaw.co.uk/law/motoring/other_motoring_t... says :
"UK residents are not allowed to use a foreign registered vehicle on UK roads. The exception is when a UK resident:
is employed or self-employed in another EU member state
uses a EU registered company car temporarily in the UK for business purposes
Certain vehicles will be required to display a temporary ‘Q’ plate. Temporary visitor status isn’t appropriate to these vehicles."
and HMRC suggest the 185 days (they say 183 actually) rule is the deciding factor for "resident" status.
