Local to me, glad it worked out for the old boy. not sure how much the repair will sting him though.

Great story! Shame about the water damaged dial. I wonder if he had the crown screwed down properly? I guess 18 months of being at the bottom of a riverbed is not the most static environment in the world! Cant imagine the bill will be cheap- new dial, new movement, new bezel insert.

It is and it wouldn't hurt Rolex too much to repair it as a goodwill gesture.

Local to me too, great story :-)

I think it will all be covered in the cost of a service too if it goes back to Rolex.

They had my Explorer for 8 weeks earlier this year after I snapped the stem so took a while but it came back looking perfect with brand new crown and glass fitted.

No chance on a inclusive repair. Water damage is mot included in the service cost. See the Youtube video where the Rolex guy in St James goes through what a standard service covers. Also Rolex with restricted parts and overpriced service and price increases far exceeding inflation are not going to do anything for free. Saying that I wonder why a Sea Dweller took on water at the bottom of a river?

Wasn't there a soldier whose Rolex took a bullet in Afghanistan where Rolex then replaced it as a gesture?

Not quite the same as an old gent falling in a river but I could see Rolex doing something here...

That was the first thing I thought.... it would provide an even better ending to an already great story.

The fact it still runs when worn, there's no obvious rust discolouration on the dial (especially round the hands), and the lume on the hands themselves is still intact and clean suggests that dial damage probably isn't from major leakage.

It only takes a tiny amount of water inside to cause condensation when a watch is cooled - which it would be in a river through at least one winter - and that sort of spotting is more consistent with standing drops of condensation than the watch being flooded.

A simple service, rather than movement replacement, will probably return it to running condition. Add a dial and bezel insert and he should be good to go smile

I took "The watch now only works if you move it, but they will be sending it off to be repaired in the new year." to mean the hands move, but it doesn't run...

My Breguet is at the bottom of the Solent - I keep hoping one day it will show up.... but a few years in salt water have probably killed it.

I had a high speed incident on my boat - fortunately I was wearing a life jacket. But my watch ended up at the bottom of the sea.

Wow - that doesn't sound like too much fun! I take it you ended up in the water eek

Yes, at 50 knots. Dislocated my shoulder and a bit lucky to be here.

A very similar accident to my old (and much missed) chum Nick who was killed a year later in Cornwall along with his daughter. Nick and I spoke very often about my accident and the fact I wasn't wearing a kill cord.... in a moment of madness, neither was he. I miss him enormously.

The missing Breguet, whilst immensely irritating, pales into insignificance.

Sorry - didn't mean to bring the mood down. smile

Your experience doesn't sound like a lot of fun at all.

I remember Nick's accident - most sad and so unnecessary. I always double check mine now - the misses thinks I'm nuts rolleyes. Of course, as you say, in the grand scheme of things it's nothing.

Anyway, anything further on the Rolex in the river?!
