Prop shaft question - 280i

Morning all,

Refitted engine the other day and prop shaft yesterday. Of all the photos I took during the body-off I don't have one showing the distance from prop shaft UJ at the gearbox end, to the gearbox itself. When I refitted the prop shaft I had to pull it out what seems like a long way to get the other end to meet the diff flange.

How much off the shaft should protrude from the gearbox? Does just under 40mm sound right? Logically it can't be wrong because nothing can move (engine/gearbox and diff, it just seems a lot.

4 cm of the sliding spline protruding seems about right from memory as that means that 5-6 cm is in the gearbox as I recall from when I was doing the Gredge 5L transplant

After you pull it out, grease the sliding spline nipple. (oooh err)
