Where are ex-lease cars cars sold?

With the number of descent cars on lease these days, it makes me wonder were these cars are sold on when they come to end of the lease and they will be well maintained, 2-3 years old and have low mileage.

Is there anywhere joe public can buy these cars?

When my Volvo came to the end of the lease, a chap came from BCA to collect it.

He said Volvo get first pick of the cars for their dealer network (the dealers bid against each other in closed auctions), then rest go through BCA's more open auctions.

As above. They will get collected from you and taken straight to auction. These are often "closed" so only open to trade buyers. The cars then typically turn up as "approved Used" on a dealer forecourt.

Virtually all BMW approved used cars at main dealers are bought at BCA or Manheim - there are weekly sales around the country. The prices are usually high.

VWFS (Audi, VW etc.), Mercedes, PSA....all sell their ex-lease/PCP stuff at auction usually one or both of BCA or Manheim although Mercedes also use Aston Barclay.

Damn. Does this mean then that my friend's leased S8, which he is looking after like it is his own, is highly likely to turn up at an Audi dealer in 1.5 years' time, as opposed to the BCA website for the public auctions?

Depends. He can make a request to buy it at the end of the lease. Some lease companies allow this as it saves them time and money.
I was offered it with my last car, at a very competitive price compared to retail.

The lease companies have high targets when it comes to de-fleeting - absolutely everything is calculated. The best way to achieve the results is to go to trade only auction. Many people think that they'll be able to snap up an ex fleet company cars at public auction, and you can, but the big boys use trade only auctions as has been pointed out above.

Also, a lot of cars are also bought unseen, I have seen a trade bidding app for ex-fleet cars that only go to virtual auction. Photo's and inspection reports are provided so the buyer knows exactly what they will get (unlike many public car auctions!).

Most 'approved used' cars come from these trade auctions.

When we chopped in our Volvo "mid lease" (don't ask) the dealer we bought the replacement car (Merc) from punted the car out through its Volvo franchise.

There's a Manhiem auction a Bruntingthorpe that has, I think, 6 lanes. They'll punt through over 300 cars in a few hours. It's quite a sight seeing them all lined up in the morning, come back 3 hours later and they're all gone!

All those new cars, three years ago, and all that money still in the metal.

That's a serious size of an 'aftermarket' industry, right there.

A few years ago I purchased a new Toyota IQ on a 3 year lease from the local Toyota dealer using Toyota finance, when it came up for renewal some guys from Manheim collected the car for auctioning later that day at Bruntingthorpe, they wandered round the car and inspected it noting mileage, dents and other signs of wear and tear on their report, then off they went. From what I can gather it is a closed 'trade only' auction.

I have a feeling my Toyota IQ would have ended back on another official Toyota dealer's forecourt before the end of the day.

Would be fantastic to see what stuff goes through their doors on a daily basis and even more of an eyeopener to see what prices are being paid by the dealers.

I usually buy ex lease cars from Scottish Motor Auction Group. The Edinburgh(Livingstone) branch has a fleet sale every Wednesday which is open to the public. It's remarkable how much damage people can do to a car in a short time though. This Astra is a month old and covered in dents, scuffs and broken bits. I wonder if it's all been done in one mishap where it's gone off the edge of the road somewhere.
