My MOT has now expired and my tax at the same time but I obviously need to re-MOT the car before taxing it.

The question is do I have to get the car trailered to the MOT because it has no current tax (declared SORN)?

Or, is it OK to drive it to a pre-booked MOT appointment, since I don't have a trailer and I'm aware that this sort of thing can be rather costly?

Obviously, I will be taxing it straight after but I don't want a £5000 fine for the sake of a tax disc.

TIA

You are allowed to drive to a pre-arranged MOT.

I know ....sorry

I was just a bit worried about the SORN/no tax part as the fine is pretty high.

It is a bit of a catch 22 though isn't it?

I believe that you can MOT your car up to one month before the old MOT expires and the new MOT will be valid for 12 months from the date of expiry of the old one.

You can also re-tax your car earlier while the old MOT is still in date, where the new tax disk comes into force when the old one expires.

(I hope what I've written makes sense )

Kentish,

Ensure that the MOT station actually makes a written record of your car being booked in. Otherwise you leave yourself open to problems if you get stopped.

Thanks nutskie, good point.

I know them at the garage and I'm sure they'd say yes anyway

Yeah but if you get a producer and you have more than a years MOT the desk jockey may querie it. Happened to me last month. I had a fine time, I practiced looking sheepish and dodgy and everything. The guy thought it was really irregular for a whole 15 mins till the seargeant came and spoiled it all by taking the old MOT out of the back of the wallet and pointing out that the MOT was fine.
