Scamera partnerships' staffing frozen

Does 'no more people' signify a shift in government road safety policies?

The DfT has confirmed that a ban on increasing staff numbers has been issued to all camera partnerships in England and Wales.

Has the Government has started to recognise the damage that speed cameras are doing to British road users, and to its battered reputation? Road safety campaign group Safe Speed said it hoped that "this is the beginning of the end of greedy and dangerous speed camera enforcement."

The DfT spokesperson said, "It was deemed to be prudent to prevent further increases in staff pending a review. The review will start in April on a by-partnership basis. Letters have been sent to each partnership."

Safe Speed founder Paul Smith said, "For years we have been pointing out that speed cameras are making the roads more dangerous. I hope and pray that this unexpected move is the dawning of realisation at the DfT that all it not well with the failed speed camera programme."

"With the numbers of Notices of Intent to Prosecute (NIPs) issued last year exceeding 3.1 million and an increase in road deaths (up to 3,508) It should be extremely obvious to everyone that speed camera policy is not making the roads safer. In fact our most careful analysis indicates that speed cameras are making the roads significantly more dangerous as the process of driving is dumbed down and drivers have become paranoid for fear of their licences."

Safe Speed calls for an immediate end to speed camera use on British roads and an urgent return to the proven policies that gave us the safest roads in the world in the first place.

No no no. The scamera partnerships are doing a wonderful job. While the govt rely on these and keep on removing real traffic cops I am free to speed where I want. A bl00dy good Gps camera detector keeps me very safe.

The last thing I want is for cops to start jumping out from behind trees with laser / radar guns.

That reminds me, must get the radar detector and laser diffuser before they are illegal.

Give the stupid voters a whiff of sensible news to cheer them up ready for the elections.

Then give them a good hard kicking after the elections.

It's obvious what's happening, the SCAM partnerships are allowed to remove their costs before handing over the balance of fines to HM treasury. Think about it, if you had a free hand to increase the size of your empire, you'd be employing more revenue collectors hand over fist, stuff the costs!! It's easy money for them!!

Happens with all businesses when there's a boom in their sector. Rapid expansion in line with a huge growth in income followed by massive cost cutting to maximise profits once income has hit the ceiling.

Sorry, did someone mention road safety? What does that have to do with any of this?

I think he's probably referring to the old-fashioned concept of Traffic Police, and possibly the use of human judgement for human frailty. Plus the silly notion of road safety comprising something a little more sophisticated than "Car go fast, man go die."

Ifs obvious that this Government will promise to "consider" changing anything that they think is unpopular with the electorate in the hope of getting votes, just wait until after the election for them to claim that they were always right, then tighten the screws. We don't need a Parlement, just President/Dictator Tony and his lap dogs.

Yep that's all it is about, suddenly we are seeing loads of foot plods and mobile patrols on the roads where it matters in TVP just shows they know how to do it right when pushed prior to an election, one plod stop tom ask me if everything was alright which I find this very comendable but a tad to close to an election to take seriously

Several of you have beat me to it:

It was deemed to be "Prudent" ( who does that sound like speaking?) to prevent further increases in staff pending a review. The review will start in April.(and by the time it's completed the election will be over)

Don't start partying yet!

This is a stupid and cynical attempt to grab votes in teh forthcoming general election. The stupidy that the Government credits us all with is insulting beyond belief.

May have to as they're the main opposition to New Labia in my ward!

Would feel better if they got rid of the crappy first past the post system in this country that means we always end up with a government voted in by a minority of the voters. Didn't Labout get in with 25% of the vote or something silly last time?

Not everyone sees through it. And some actively support it. Sadly not all of those people we sit with on the tube in a morning are as bright as we'd like them to be.
