Another remanufactured ECU arrived this morning?, Any tips before I plug it in? I really don't want to fry ECU number 3!! Checked earths, and no the battery isn't on the wrong way round, anything else I should check? Of course I could just be using sub-standard remanufactered ECU's and there could be nothing wrong with the car at all! Will fire her up this evening and post the result, Simon.

Thanks, but after consulting the bible it says that any sparks made while reconnecting the battery can damage the ECU! So you can't win either way!!

Much safer to disconnect battery first !!!
Disconnect negative first, followed by positive and reconnect positive first followed by negative.

I would never replace any electronic component without disconnecting the battery.

Good luck.

Bloody hell, I changed the main fuses on my griff the other day. Disconnected the negative terminal and when I went to reconnect it, it was sparking like fk. How the hell do you disconnect the battery and reconnect it without it sparking?

I hope I haven't damaged anything, I took it for a 20 mile drive and it was OK. That's the last time I fk about with it. Leave it to the experts.

When reconnecting, just make the one firm contact, a bit tricky down there though !!

Replaced relays with the correct bosch ones, disconnected battery before connecting new ECU and BINGO! Hope this one lasts more than a couple of hundred miles. When replacing everything back into the footwell I noticed how easy it would be for the metal relays to move and risk the possibility of shorting something, so wrapped everything up individually in a layer of bubble wrap, paranoid or what??

Good work - it'll be the first of many 'mods' to overcome the inherent 'character' in these wonderful cars. Careful the bubble wrap doesn't insulate the relays to the point of their overheating though - they do get quite hot.
