Parcel Shelf

Just bought a new style parcel shelf for my V8V 2006. As the pins are not retractable, I was told that the side pieces could be adjusted so the new fixed pins could drop in. Has anyone done this as I cannot see how it will work. Apparently the new side pieces are almost as dear as the shelf..

I had some recollection of them not being very much, but a quick search suggests not! And also that the OP might have hassles...
