DISK Recovery Problem

Just had a hard disk failure on our domain controller. Turns out if had first stuffed our SMTP service (no email will get through to me) and then the boot sector.
A couple of restarts later the damn thing wouldn't boot.
We've shoved the drive into another machine and its accessible to "File Scavenger"...so we might be able to get some of the stuff off it...
Has anyone used any software that has got this sort of disk bootable again without losing data?
Needless to say our backups are older than we would have liked or I wouldn't be asking this question...
