valve stem oil seals
Discussion
Hi all
Just picking brains here again. I have got new oil seals to fit to the valve stems on my 350i. The seals are the washer type which are just for the inlet valves. I believe the seals sit on top of the valve guides; however, what I can't figure out is what keeps them in place and how they seal? Can anybody shed any light on this please?
Cheers
Steve

Not worked on a Rover specifically, but on many 2 valve engines, the 'seals' aren't really, they are just deflectors to stop oil running down the stems, where it would be sucked into combustion chambers. That is also why they are only on inlets.
There is enough oil splashing around from rockers to give enough lubrication.
Ford V6 (and others) have a much more obvious 'top hat' design to do this, but they do have one on every valve, probably not necessary.
