Fallout or metal gear solid?
Discussion
Hi everyone,
I am currently torn between the above two titles, I have never played either and both have impressive trailers, reviews and followings.
I tend to waste evenings on fifa and feel like I would enjoy a game I can properly get Into. I have not played a story like game since the old call of duties which I did love, but just haven't been able to get on board with the later ones.
I understand fallout and mgs are pretty different games, but could anyonr shed any light in comparisons or their opinion on the better game?
I enjoy good graphics and a nice open world which these both have.
Any help appreciated!

They're both good games, but I enjoyed MGS a lot more, never thought I'd say that.
MGS, running round collecting bottle tops gets boring after a while
Yes, I haven't gelled with FO at all. I found it over complicated and confusing with very little help in terms of guidance.
I couldn't stand Falout 4, which was dissapointing as I loved number 3 and New Vegas. Thought it was a complete buggy mess and not much fun. Traded it in and grabbed MGS which I enjoyed much more.
Edit - didn't see the post above mine: if it's not in the running, then the Witcher 3 deserves to be there as a consideration. Cleaning up the Game of the Year Awards;

I used to play MGS5 pretty much every day.
It is a very, good game. But it's not truly open, many areas are inaccessible because of terrain.
Multiple locations are good - Africa / Afghanistan etc.
I'm, i think, 50-60% through the story, and to be honest it is fairly repetitive.
go in, silent sniper people, fulton the good ones out. extract a "special" person, get extracted.
the problem with mgs5 is that there are not enough good quality cutscenes, go back to mgs3 and it was like a movie with gameplay. that was how MGS should be
i like the gameplay mechanics but there is a lot of repetitiveness about it.
i also have fallout 4 and i much prefer fallout 4 if i'm honest. but both are good.
Think you will get more longevity out of fallout 4.

Had both and both are completely different.
Go for MGS first as it'll take up less time and has to be experienced as it really is fantastic.
If you played any of the Bethesda RPGs before then you'll like Fallout 4. I put in months of time into the last two Elder Scrolls games and really enjoy the variety, adventuring and storylines. The addition of a bit of FPS (albeit a poor one compared to dedicated FPS games) is really good too.
Have a look on Youtube at the first 30 mins of Fallout and see if that's your thing but regardless get MGS.

Exactly the same I've been hearing about Fallout 4 tbh - go here, kill the mutants/raiders, go there, collect these resources, rinse, repeat.
MGS is quite broad - there are main missions, side missions, FOB, collectibles, resource management, equipment upgrading and multiplayer.
I think the wide array of weapons, accessories, load outs, vehicles and buddies gives scope for a lot of experimentation in play style too.
"Extract a special person" - carry them, fulton, stick them on your horse, steal a jeep or call in the chopper?
I've not played Fallout 4 though, so I can't say for sure if it's really better or worse, but my impression is there are more options in MGS.

You can't customise weapons until you've done a certain amount of missions in MGS5, and even then, what you are able to customise is very limited. For example I wanted to put an unlimited silencer on my default ZZZ pistol. But you can't, despite getting the gunsmith dude, because you have to unlock it FIRST by unlocking the pistol itself, which you won't do until late, late in the game.
No multiplayer but who cares? The MGS5 multiplayer is crap, never working anyway. The only "online" play I've done on it is the online missions where you send you guys out to do whatever.
Fo4 has all of the resource management, arguably more so because you need to collect wood, steel, copper, adhesive etc, these are all limited items you have to find and break down for components. If you want to craft a silencer you need to have 5 steel, 1 adhesive, one tin can, whatever items it is you need. The base building is far better in FO4 because you can build literally anything.
Loadouts are pretty irrelevant in FO4 as you can carry whatever you need and change it easily while you're playing.
With FO4 you build a character and you can skill them up as such -
For example I have built a rifleman/sniper, focusing on stealth damage and long range stuff, hence my perks are geared towards damage boosts using rifles and while undetected .
You don't have this ability on mgs5.
Ok, so you can extract them by putting them in a jeep or whatever, but you're still extracting them out.
The quests are relatively repetitive in terms of goal in FO4, yes, but the map is so vast and so full of different kinds of monsters , and methods.
Do you want to go in guns blazing, or do you want to find a protectron, hack the terminal and sit back as it kills everyone for you?
MGS and FO4 both offer a selection of companions too
Both are good games but FO4 has far far far better a) replayability factor b) longevity in terms of quests. I've done about 20 quests in FO4 and only two of those have been even remotely related to the main story! Loads of bits you can go and explore, you can speak to many NPCs , effect outcomes of conversations, etc etc.
As I said, both are good, but everything you've listed that MGS5 has, FO4 has also, arguably more.
The issue is you can play one mission on MGS5 and have a good idea of the gameplay where as with FO4 you need a lot more time to play it.
I think if you can only play for 30 mins / 1hr at a time then MGS is the game for you, if you can sit there for 3 or 4 hours at a time then FO4

I've got both, I played MGSV to start with and it is fantastic but as has been said it does get repetitive. The first chapter was great but the second chapter I found a big disappointment personally. You can either keep playing side missions to progress through the story and unlock new main missions or repeat harder versions of previous missions with the same result. Eventually I got bored and gave up with it. The FOB mission type stuff was lost on me, found it a bit dull and you have to be 'into' games I think for it to work to its full potential. I've been a great fan of MGS1, MGS2 and particularly MGS3 which was absolutely amazing. In a way I'd much prefer it as a more linear storyline format as previously.
Fallout 4 takes a while to get rolling but it's brilliant. Once you get into it, it's life sapping and urges you to play on. I'm biased but I would say Fallout is the best bet.
