Hello All,

I have a construction company in London doing mostly civil engineering and concrete works. How's the best way to find guys, looking to take on a few this year coming like machine operators, gangers, chippies etc.
A friend in the recruitment game recommends cv-library but it's pricy, so far all my guys were word of mouth.

Best bet is get guys from a agency and then see how they perform.
If they are decent take them on directly either via subby or direct basis.
(We use a agency who were able to do this directly after a 8 week period)

Exactly!

All the good ones don't need agency work.

There is so much work out there, all the best tradesmen are booked up for months.

Good luck with the hunt.

Agree, however 1 in 8 is better than no additional operatives and turning down work!

The good guys either are directors themselves, or with a firm and happy so you haven't really got a alliterative other than to try the 1 in 8 route.
You also need to accept your not going to get 100% out of everyone, some 100, some 90 some 80%'s however that's business and the way of employment

Well if you're going to do that, why not add an incentive - split the difference of an agency fee and nothing. But on a 'got to last 6 weeks' or similar basis; or even tier it a bit, so rubbish bods that are a 'bum on a seat' get a few quid (but no real loss to you), but a 'diamond' offer the referrer a decent few quid after the qualifying period / the incentive being not just bringing in rubbish.
