As long as I have owned Cerbera it has always had a slight play on 5th gear when going on and off power. After reading some gearbox horror stories I decided to take the box apart.
My respect to all of you who have managed to take the box down without a lift. It was extremely tight even when the car was in a nice working height.
After removing the extension the problem was obvious - upper 5th gear can be moved back and forth about 1,5mm by hand.
Has anyone seen this kind of gear with groove before? (I didnt find anything with Google). The groove is very effective to stop the clip popping out, the negative side is the backlash.

Merry Christmas Viku - another perfect Xmas card from you!

Sorry can't help with the 5th gear issue right now, might be able to check my blown up box when I get home.

Mine has the groove in it but I don't remember any free play in it when I reassembled it. I guess you could possibly put round shim between it and the bearing to stop this? I would be careful doing this as you don't know the true position of the shaft and bearing until the rear case is fitted. Numerous circular shims come with a rebuild kit to get the correct preload on the shafts so I am sure you could buy something off the shelf.

I modified a c-clip to right thickness and diameter to be used behind the gear. The bearing needed some grinding too to get the clip in.

Paul, from older thread I read you put a counter gear stabilizer plate in your gearbox. Did you order it from US or does someone sell those on this side of Atlantic?

John Readman at Readman Racing sells them.

Ordered from 5speeds.com, but showing out of stock at the moment.

He has lots of useful videos on YouTube as well.

5 speeds shims are worth it two.

I had no issues with my box when it came off
For a crank seal etc. I thought I would check it over
And fit 5 speeds stabiliser plate. The inputshaft had too much play
For my liking and counter shaft end play could be felt. Internals were spotless
After setting up the box with the plate and 5 speeds prealoads
The box is like silk!

Hi guy's, I am rebuilding my box as there seems to be a lot of play both input and driven 5th gear. Watching gearbox man / 5 speeds, it looks like that gear should need pulling off the shaft or pressing off in a press. Once I removed the clip, mine fell off the shaft!

Now I am not sure if the gear is buggered or the shaft, difficult to tell...

Any advice or learnings from doing yours?

Mine was a close, sliding fit on the shaft - no press needed.

Same here, set preloads as 5 speeds video, my box was good before, now it's smoother and precise!

So after getting into the box a bit more I have found that the driven 5th gear (small one) has basically chewed up the main shaft (output) which is why I have play. The 5th gear should be a press fit and only go on using a proper hydraulic press, I was able to nearly pull mine all the way off of the shaft by hand!

So, the question is now, where can I get a main shaft and was the main shaft used in another setup on any other car? Also, I am struggling to find original 5th gears, I only need the small one, any ideas?

I also found that the roller on the 5th /reverse selector shaft is very loose, and has loads of play, probably the main reason why reverse has been hard to get.

Try readman racing for parts or gearbox man.
