Girlfriend spilt tea on her new Mac laptop keyboard a few days ago. Seemed to work ok afterwards and panic over. Not for long though - switched it on today for the first time since - no sign of life.

Anybody done the same and rescued the laptop? Is it worth opening it up and looking for anything in particular - or is it an insurance job?

Cheers

Was there sugar in the tea? (Serious question).

If so, I suggest this is an insurance job. If not, some careful internal cleaning with a cotton bud and isopropyl alcohol may help, especially around any push-fit connectors.

Personally, if there's insurance available, I'd go for it.

Almost definitely an insurance job.

I saw this happen on a plane in US last week. One moment exec is tapping away on his laptop then he accepts a glass of water from a cabin attendant, catches the glass on the screen and drops the lot on the keyboard. Expletives weren't deleted! B*stard tried having a go at the attendant saying it was her fault. But the guy next to him intervened just as it was about to get nasty and exec backed off.

It's a sobering reminder not to mix laptop work and drinking on a plane and one that must happen fairly often. On reflection seems like a good way to get an upgrade for a 3 year old Dell unit. Just make sure you backed it up first.

A friend recently did the same with her iBook although it was a glass of red wine, luckily it didnt get past the keyboard into the case. All i did was replace the keyboard and its fine now. Might be worth taking it apart and having a looky, if you do drop me a mail as i have the apple service manual telling you how to do it. You could easily break it to sell the parts that work on ebay as some bits make good money such as the screen, optical drive and keyboard.

My Thinkpad survived lattefication the other day. Had sugar in too. I lifted the cover and had a good clean with a cotton bud.
The guys on the helpdesk said that if it stopped working it was likely be terminal (rather than fixed easily) due to the coffee, so may be an insurance job??

Thanks folks. I've passed your comments on to let her decide.

Wildeep - there's a mail in the post. Cheers.
