Hi folks,
Not finding massive satisfaction in my current games library.... just played through Crysis 2 and into Crysis 3 and they're OK but I'm finding them a bit clockwork; got the Bioshock Infinite DLC lined up for sometime in the future but probably not while I'm a bit FPS jaded. WoT and Amored Warfare aren't calling to me at the moment, either.
So I'm looking for something else to get my teeth into; not FPS; not very sandbox - I always get bored quickly with very very open games - for example, not clearing all of Far Cry 3 or Batman Arkham City once I'd finished the main plots (far too quickly on BAC); I like games that are open within each mission/chapter, but run a story - for example the early Hitman games. I also have Weird Worlds and FTL for "dipping into" games, although FTL is a bit too hard IMO!
Just looked at Elite and a flash back to the X universe... but I think too much time needed to make serious progress in those games
Same thing with RPGs and all "grinding" MMOs.
There's just sooooo many games around (I just browsed through the Steam sale list... how do you even start to choose???!) these days my head boggles!

How about a fast loading, good looking and easy to save & come back to type puzzler?
Machinarium, £1.74 on sale - http://store.steampowered.com/app/40700/
Don't watch the first video as it gives away level solutions.

Was just about to suggest FTL ... then I read your post properly!
It is a real sod, I have now spent over 200 hrs on that b*stard but there are things you can do to help. Use pause a lot. Kill the crew instead of destroying the ship gives more scrap, etc. I have all ships except the Crystal cruiser which is a pest.
I have been drawn into Minecraft Blightfall recently, sufficiently different to hold my miniscule attention!

And if you don't have Portal 2 get it - http://store.steampowered.com/app/620/

I'm basing it on his posted requirements and my experience. Dispite Elite being the sort of game I should really enjoy, I'm having real trouble getting any enjoyment out of it. If you add into that a requirement for some sort of structure, then it's a non starter for the op in my opinion.
Total war, I'm basing that on it being a bit different from the kind of games that have left him jaded, it has structure in certain modes and a fairly clear win state. It's also huge and can absorb hours or alternatively, you can dip in for a few mins and do a custom battle.
Portals I played years ago; Dishonored was good (waiting for a sequel); Tomb Raider never really appealed. I got Civ 5 when I had a broken wrist earlier this year and needed one-handed games (no sniggering at the back there)... Played one game and couldn't understand how I'd suddenly won! So that didn't feel like I wanted to start another game.
I'll check out that puzzler; but I did notice as I glanced again through the Steam sale.... 10,104 games just in the sale!
I think I'd like something slightly open, spacey, plot driven and RPG-ish-lite.
Mass Effect is coming into my head, for some reason... does that sound right?

Mass Effect series is awesome but the first is quite old and fairly RPG heavy but it can really suck you in. Two is better and has less RPG tones, three is even less RPG centric but is a very good game. Probably available as a trilogy cheap in the origin sale. Exit, just checked, £14.99 for all three until midnight tonight.I'll check out that puzzler; but I did notice as I glanced again through the Steam sale.... 10,104 games just in the sale!

Agree with mass effect, pick up the dlc too as (especially for 3) it's bobbins without it.
My GotY is Life is Strange, it's not for everyone but I found it exceptional, and completely unexpected too which is nice.
Just be warned though that it can get very dusty in the air when playing it.

Just a word regarding LiS it starts off fairly slowly in Episode 1, before smacking you in the face halfway through 2 and getting tougher from there - so stick with it.
To those who recommended LiS, thanks
Very different to a FPS!!
For me, it was a bit like having a film on in the background while doing something else, then realising you've stopped doing that and are totally gripped by the film instead.
A bit annoying at the end though.... seems I might end up with the same problem with Mass Effect as many people discussing LiS are referencing the same sort of thing there...
