Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Quattro Special Edition (2006)

So after around 16 months of owning a MK4 Golf GTi 1.8T , which was suffering from a intermittent misfire that no garage could seem to rectify, I thought I would get myself a new car...
A month or so of trawling through Autotrader led to me deciding that I wanted an Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Quattro Special Edition, with a budget of between £6k-£7k....
Last weekend I travelled two & a half hours to view an Audi I spotted online, and subsequently bought it, giving me a nice return trip down the A303 to give the car a good "flooring"! It is certainly a faster proposition than the Golf, albeit as thirsty when it comes to petrol!
The car at purchase had just under 72k miles on the clock, 18" alloys (with barely a scratch on them), near perfect condition two tone interior leather, twin black tipped exhausts, 6 speed manual, 2.0 turbo charged engine with about 220bhp, full service history and new tyres & brakes on all four corners!
The options it misses compared to some of the other examples of this model are cruise control (not really something I need as I barely drive on motorways) and heated seats (once again not something I am too bothered about). It was also missing all the floor mats.
The one issue with the car though is realising that at idle there is a slight misfire. My local garage have given it the once over and found its a misfire on one of the cylinders which is not down to the coil pack/spark plug nor a compression issue, so they will investigate further when I take it back into them in the new year! Fingers crossed that will be resolved by the middle of January, and there will be nothing left for me to complain about!
In terms of what I have done to the car since I have got it, the list is pretty small;
-Cleaned the petrol system with some Redex Petrol Injector Cleaner
-Fitted a set of floor mats; a cheap set off eBay with the "S Line" logo (maybe in time I will try find some genuine ones)
In terms of what I want to do (I would argue some of these are a bit pipe dream!);
-Tint the rear windscreen & windows
-Replace the stock exhaust system for a Milltek system (even though the stock system doesn't sound too wimpy)
-Give it a remap
-Upgrade the ICE
-Keep the car well-maintained & looked after
-Putting on a pair of pressed registration plates with Audi Sport surrounds
-Fix the parking sensors
-Anything else I think of!
Driving wise, I have clocked up just under 500 miles in the last week, with an average mpg of 23! On the motorway/dual carriageway it is a pretty smooth cruiser and on smaller roads it is plenty fast enough for overtaking duties, plus the quattro system lets you carry alot more speed through mud caked back lanes! It is however a bit crashy on bumpy roads due to the 18" alloys and sport suspension!
Finally the car has got a mixed reception with some people calling it "boring", "old man car", "family car", whereas other people really liking it looks, & being a passenger in it!

The special edition and the DTM both had the same 220hp, its just a map on the standard 197hp motor, nothing else changed. DTM also had exclusive seats, different front and rear bumpers, dtm badges on the side rather than s-line and a few other bits i cant remember off the top of my head.

Thanks for clearing that up, don't think they made many of the DTMs did they? There wasn't many floating about on auto trader when I looked!SteBrown91 said:
The misfire is likely the pcv/breather pipe/ both of them.
Common issue on the earlier 2.0 tfsi engines (fitted to yours, the mk5 gti etc)

The garage did say they think it could possibly be a valve spring!
But whatever it is , hopefully it's not too expensive, and I can spend the money I had leftover from my budget on a few little modifications!

Joking aside, I've always liked the look of these and a mate has one that is approaching 150k miles and it just gets regular servicing really without any major problems to report. It also does up to ~38mpg on a run as far as I remember.

Had one brand new in 2006 - those are the wrong wheels (they're off the dtm edition) it should have 5 spokes.
Exhaust tips were black too.
Mine went like stink, took it to 80,000 caning it every day like it was on a rally stage - only ever needed a fuel pressure regulator electrical plug replacing + servicing, tyres etc.
Mine was a 6 speed manual Quattro, didn't have cruise control either.

Oh don't start haha, my exact thoughts when I noticed the misfire, but I got it from a dealer so if it comes to light it's one of those undiagnosable misfires, I might have to get in contact with them about getting a refund.Joking aside, I've always liked the look of these and a mate has one that is approaching 150k miles and it just gets regular servicing really without any major problems to report. Yeah I have heard good things about their reliability, so hopefully this will be the first and last issue! I'll probably keep this one for a few years, so should end up with 100k+ miles on the clock.

Ah okay, pretty chuffed to be honest with the wheels, think I prefer them to the five spoke variety I have seen.Exhaust tips were black too.

It does have quite a poke to it, I've found myself looking down at the speedo and being surprised how fast I'm going!
Like in the previous post, hopefully mine will have similar reliability going forward!
Did you ever think about a remap? I am tempted as I've read it's quite a tuneable engine, but not sure whether it will bring more problems than benefits!
I owned one of these for 4-years, and it was brilliant. I changed the alloys and had a Revo map fitted, which was incredible. They achieved around 265bhp and the performance was amazing. The mpg improved a little, my car averaged 24mpg on my mixed 4-mile drive to work at 37-39mpg on a good run. Don't worry about the remap, just go for it!

Great choice
We have the Avant version in black. Had it mapped at AMD which upped performance v nicely but also uncovered the worn cam meaning very top end power drains off or flat out in 6th you run out of fuel just over 100 mph (on a circuit obviously) and you have to wait for a bit to get some more!
Still love it, will replace the cam soon.

Run it on 99 octane / shell v power or tesco momentum
replace the dv and pcv valve and cam follower (v important)
replace the coil packs, may as well get red R8 ones (OEM ones are a known weakness and failures are often intermittent) and spark plugs
almost guaranteed the misfire will go away.

I echo the comments above, breathers & coils well worth replacing. Might even get Audi to do the coils for free.

What alloys did you put on, RS alloys? Thats a decent BHP figure, was that just a Stage 1 remap? You didn't upgrade any of the engine before doing that did you?S6OOH said:

Cheers, I was tempted by an Avant version, I think there is something cool about fast estates. Yeah its coming up to having to replace the cam belt on mine, so if I got the remap done I'd probably replace that first. Once I have used up this tank of supermarket fuel, I was planning on using some of the higher octane fuel, alot of people online have raved about the benefits it brings. I just dropped the car back into the garage this morning, be interesting to see what they diagnose as the issue. Was thinking about doing the coil packs & spark plugs myself at some point in the near future, so I will have a look at the R8 versions. These TFSI's run so much better on 99.
When mapped a 95 octane Ed30 for example can only do about 260-270bhp.
With no other mods other than 99 octane fuel you can run around 300!
On my GTI I ran it with bp ultimate for a while, cos I was an idiot, moved to 99 and it was far more responsive and quick, and the MPG was better too!
The extra cost was more than offset by the extra MPG.
