Radiator fan permanently on on 944 Lux
Discussion
Hi Everyone,
Unfortunately I've got another problem with the cooling system on my 944 Lux (1988 2.5), in that the radiator fan seems to be stuck on.
I noticed when I got home today that the radiator fan was still on, and stayed on while I washed the car. It didn't go off, even though the radiator and all pipes were stone cold by this point, so I pulled the fuse to prevent it draining the battery.
What could be causing this? is it likely to be the thermostatic switch, and as the engine temperatue guage is reading normally I'm guessing it's not the temperature sensor?
Also she's still leaking coolant, though I think I've isolated the leak, it's that little plastic plug on the front of the engine next to the thermostat housing, that would I presume be the take-off for the turbo coolant were mine a turbo model. Only thing is I don't know what that plastic piece is called (would appreciate any enlightenment
). I took it off and inspected it, and the rubber seal inside seems to have perished (I tried a bit of gasket paper between the plastic bit and the block to see if that would work, but it didn't), so is it a case of just needing a new seal or do I have to buy a plastic bit as well.
Cheers,
Fatboy

youre almost certainly right in thinking its the thermostatic sensor. mine did the same thing, except I had it parked at work all day so by the time I finished up the battery was dead. the kind AA man simply disconnected the sensor. the only danger of this is if you spend the next 2 hours in a traffic jam and the engine overheats but in this weather, unlikely as long as you keep moving. its an easy job to replace, I think the sensor cost about £2!
The fan running on will most likely be the thermostatic switch fitted to the lower part of the engine radiator (engine side). quite a large hexagonal bolt fitting and a plastic part where the wires go. Easy to do and a good auto parts shop will be able to supply you with a replacement.

A thermostatic switch ! Just take it out and pop down to a GOOD auto parts store. They will be to match it up. They will have to get the temperatures right but they are stamped on the brass body of the switch so no hassle.

I didn't mean the thermostatic switch, sorry to be unclear. I meant the large plastic cap on the front of the engine that (on the non-turbo models) covers the hole for the turbo coolant feed in the block, I need a new seal.new plastic bit and don't know what it's called....
