Just looking for some advice, two speed cameras were recently installed on the motorway near me,

now they are in the central area of the motorway and look as if they are watching the 'fast lane' .

Are they actually watching all three lanes??

If so what if I am driving at 70 in the slow lane and my idiot comes flying down in the fast lane at 90 and passes the line at the same time as me - do we both get a letter and a fine?

I hardly think you will get a fine as the 2 photos will show the car in the outside lane is has travelled a much greater distance than you between shots.

sorry sc I meant they were once on the motorway near me - it was the m6 -

I was just wanting to know how the cameras would work over the three lanes - I was hoping you would respond being an officer!!

and a gentleman..

Unfortunately, I don't work static cameras like those...and aren't au fait with all types..

If they are leica or LTI, I can give you details....the same as can be found on most police sites or manufacturer's sites..(ie: i'm not breaking any secrets, or divulging what I shouldn't)...

It's likely that they are the leica types and in that case would only work inthe lanes which they were above.

If they're speed cameras, the road will be signed?

They may just be observation cameras.

They only have revenue cameras on motorways when they have imposed a stupidly low limit because of roadworks. Usually the roadworks are there so they can have cameras (Chicken or egg). Anyway if these cameras are the big yellow ones and there are lines on the road then even if the thieves send a NIP and you were nt speeding just ask for the pictures. The Gatso revenue camera has a speed detector built in but the evidence comes from the 2 pictures taken 1 second apart (I bleieve its 1 second) This allows the number of 1 metre lines between the 2 pictures to be counted and used to calculate the speed

The formula needed is S=Ut as no acceleration is taken into account and the mean speed between the two flashes is calculated

NB S= distance U = velocity and t + time you need to then convert mS-1 to MPH If you ever get done I will hapilly do the calculation but right now its too late and I am far too drunk

What kind of cameras? If you don’t know; what kind of road markings are there in front of the camera?

Almost certainly. One Gatso, Truvelo or SPECs camera can simultaneously enforce all lanes (albeit not so well when a lot of traffic is present).

The resulting pictures will allow the operator to determine which driver is the actual offender. (This is not a problem for SPECs)

as a lot (certainly at blunderside police) of the camera staff are minimum wage chavs (or certainly speak as if they are) who are not the sharpest tools in the box, you may just get an NIP anyway, speeding or not. The photos will prove it, but they can play the 'advanced disclosure' card where you can only see them if you go to court - and risk a heavier fine if you actually were speeding.

It's all good, honest, money making stuff don't you think?
