I'm just waiting for my new monitor to arrive, and since it was bought with photography in mind I've gone for something that gets decent reviews for colour accuracy etc. But I think it might need tinkering with slightly to start with.

What's the consensus on a decent colorimeter? So far I'm seeing either the Datacolor Spyder5Express for £80 or the Colormunki Smile at £67 - and the latter gets very mixed reviews. Is there anything else to consider?

And any idea why so few (if any) places rent out colorimeters?

I've used Spyders for years, currently have the Spyders 5 Pro. Always been happy with them and their customer support was very helpful on the one occasion I had some software problems.

I guess few if any places hire them out as they're relatively cheap and if consistency of colour is really important then it's something you want to use regularly, I re-cal my monitor every month just to be safe.

X-rite i1 display pro is another option, although a tad more expensive.

Cheaper on the link from Calumet (£134) compared to Amazon (£180).

I've been very happy with it.
