Help me. CLS or S Class.
Discussion
To begin with i was considering An Audi A8 with either the W12 or 4.2 TDI.
Ive come across a couple of lovely CLS500 388hp models for reasonable cash.
As you do though trawl through the classifieds and find a decent S500 and S600 bi turbo up within a reasonable price.
Now being new to Mercedes what are the basics I need to be on look out for?
Obviously any one i buy im asking for decent warranty plus some extras

I have had a CLS 500 with the 388 bhp and engine for a month and I have to say it is lovely, the S class is a level up in terms of ultimate luxury but the CLS is hardly slumming it, the 388 bhp moves it very well, it is never lacking in power but obviously if you go for a higher power/supercharged one that will be even faster but so far, I have never thought, hmm this needs more power, I did with my 350Z but not with this, its 388 bhp after all, even being heavy its enough to gain speed rapidly, under 5 sec has been recorded to sixty, 100 in under 12.
I would love to try a S Class, I expect with the same engine it will be impressive, if not quite as quick for being a bit heavier, but there isnt that much in it.
Ty and get a post facelift CLS otherwise you can end up with the lower powered engine, its nice but the 388 bhp engine makes a big difference, watch out for the engine number, make sure it misses out on the M273 cam chain issues and the daft SBC brakes, check that it sits right ont he air suspension and doesnt sink when stood.
I think the CLS is better looking, the S class is more of a proper saloon, access to the rear in the CLS is not brilliant but ok.
If you get an oily smell, like burning, its probably two plugs at the back of the engine, easy and cheap diy fix, but a good bargaining point ?

What's your budget? I was an Audi man previously having had 2 V10 S6's one saloon and then an avant interspersed with a couple of Range Rovers.
Like you, I was looking into an A8 or more specifically a D3 S8 but the ones in my budget were high mileage and a bit rough.
J4CKO will tell you that I was very close to going to see the CLS he had bought. I decided against it as I had enough of big petrol engines. Instead I went for a 2008 S class. 320 CDI with the 3.0 V6 engine. It's got the Brabus bodykit on as well as the D6 chip taking power to around 270bhp. I absolutely love it. So much more luxurious than my previous cars. I don't really miss the power of the petrol cars however the power delivery of a chipped turbo diesel makes it feel quite fast. The ride is great on air suspension even with 20" wheels. Plenty of toys including heated memory massage seats and night vision. I'd go S class all the way. The only way to tell us to take both out for a test drive.
J4CKO, come have a drive of mine if you're ever in Manchester City Centre!

I think the S class is definitely peerless in terms of luxury, not that the CLS is slumming it, it was the shape that drew me to it, next time it will have a supercharger, not that I feel like I need extra, just that there is more available, I think though you summed it up by saying you were bored of big petrols, I expect you get to a position where enough performance is plenty and any more is just extra cost and hassle, a remapped big diesel is never felt to be lackign in real world driving, in fact generally seems quicker than most, most of the time.
My father had an S class and then hes got a CLS now - both with the 350 bluetec engine.
Im 45 and prefer the CLS against the S Class - yes the S class is a superb car but its heavy an it is huge. The CLS looks better and doesnt have the high end taxi feel about it that the S class has.
