Veritas Backup Exec V10 Setup and queries
Discussion
Hi All,
A couple of question if you will, one a problem, the other a query as to how best to do something:
1. I am having, every so often, exchange mailboxes reported to be having corrupt messages, which then fails the backup. Obviously being a perfectionist I like having sucessful backups, and am not happy with just being content with a failed backed which is actually sucessful apart from one problem. What is the best way to handle theses corrupt messages, do I need to remove the messages, or do I need to look at maybe trying find the cause (if any)?
2. I have reconfigured the server backup, i.e. the backup that should allow me to rebuild and reinstate my SBS2k server. I have set it up to backup the Exchange mailboxes (inc. Public Folders), and the System State (includes all options). However, there is no real definitive guidelines on how to best backup a server - so what should I be selecting in order to be able to restore my server (I'm using a DDS3 tape as well...)?
All my Data is handled by a diffrent backup on a DLT which is separate to the above.
Your thoughts and ideas are welcomed.
Neil

Doesn't Backup exec offer a "wizard" for backups? I vaguely recall using this when I setup our backup server, and it was quite helpful in ensuring a backup could be restored.
How many people here backup systems with no idea whether they can restore the data later on? I bet it's pretty common!

This is part of my reason for asking, as I saw the wizard, but then I wanted to make sure I could do a restore by making sure I back the right stuff up, and then I could do a test restore.
I wonder though, like you say, how many people blindy backup in full faith of their backup software?

Used it since it was a Seagate product. The System options should allow you to restore the system in the event of a total failure. Trouble is I don't know anyone who has had need to. The servers are replaced before they go THAT wrong. I presume the server has a RAID5 disk array. If it doesn't why not? If one of the disks goes wrong you just have to swap it for another identical one and the data is rebuilt.
We view it more from a "what if the building burns down" perspective - eg what does your business continuity plan include for this eventuality...
I know we can restore data from backups, as this is tested regularly, but a full system restore is harder to test if you don't have a spare server sat around to do it on!

Correct me if I'm wrong though - don't I remember correctly that there was an ex veritas guy on PH?
Never met BE10, but I'll have a go!
1) This problem is most likely down to a) Corrupt message b) running mailbox anti-virus software during backup c) Running some other kind of file filtering software
I'd suggest if it's just one email all the time to remove it. If you're running AV software then it's your call if you want to disable it during backups!
2) Backup all the drives and the system state. In order to restore a DC you'll certainly need the system state! If you have Exchange/SQL then use the BE options to back them up online, or stop the services. Don't use the open file option for these. Also, you don't need the open file option for the system state.
Alternatively, use Legato/EMC products, they are far better

Yay, at last someone who can confirm what I need to know. I was really unsure what I needed to do to backup the server itself, as the manuals are a bit vague, all 'this is what this button is' and not'this is what happens if you press this'...
So you are telling me - in short:
To backup a W2k DC:
1. Backup both system drive and any application drive (as we know you shouldn't install apps on the system (c
drive) 2. Select all System State options
3. To back up Exchange, select to backup Mailboxes but NOT the mdb/edb's? If I use the Mailbox option, is this the same as the 'on-line' option (I believe BackupExec V10 is nearly the same as V10?
Cheers

You have to backup Exchange through the database option.
You will NOT be able to recover the Exchange system from a mailbox backup. Mailbox backups are only for the recovery of individual mailboxes/emails and are not designed for a full recovery.
Hope that's clear enough for you
BTW - another hint, place the Exchange db logs on a different physical drive to the database files!
