I took my new toy down to the Berkshire TVR CC meet last night - a noise meter.

I had always thought my SEAC was too quite .. needs more volume..

So here are the results from memory..

GavinR 420 SEAC : 98.9 db
SteveR 400 SE : 99.6 db
Rev 450 SEAC : 101.6 db

so bit of surprise .. Gavin's SEAC which we all think is loud is the quietest and would be able to do many track days.. quite a surprise.

Trouble is Gavin now wants a new louder exhaust

I measured this at 45 degrees to exhaust - 1 meter away at 4000 revs : at that is how I believe the circuit's measure this.. if you know different - then let me know.

We also tested a Tuscan (S6) : and that recorded :
104 db which was a bit of a surprise until I asked him how many revs he was using : 1st change up light was showing : so I believe that's about 5500 !

When we retested at 4000 this dropped to 98 db - although I'm sure a Tuscan should be tested at slightly higher revs..

Good fun and surprising results, I always thought I'd be banned from trackdays.

Have to think of another excuse now

Sounded louder on the M4 on the way home and I think that was the coldest trip yet roof down, it was -3 in High Wycombe. Dickymint will be impressed, and a sheepskin would have come in handy

From memory mine was 115Db @ 4,500 tested a few years ago at a sprint event at North Wield airfield.

Same distance & angle etc...

a lot of circuits test at 3/4 power or at least 4500rpm. Mine was (before all the mods) 113db. I'd hate to think what it is these days with induction noise also now adding to the surrounding noise...

Blast, if I'd known you was going there I'd have popped along, as only 2 miles down the road.

Just as well we didn't get too many - was expecting to be ushered from the car park - good turn out - shame we missed Rob and the other wedge owner?

BTW - the MX5 crew opened the window to listen when we left desires of wanting a sports car obviously

I think they test at 1/2 metre, which would make a difference of maybe 2 dba ?

Tim you are right - I found this on Easytracks web site :

"A noise meter is placed at a 45 degree angle to the exhaust outlet and 50cm away. The car is then held at 3/4 of its maximum rev limit and the highest reading recorded is the cars recorded noise output for the day."

mine was 117db @ 1/2 meter when measured 2 years ago.
Now the wadding in the silencer has burnt its probably louder. That was dbA weighted

Rev -
Noise meter at the BBWF would be good entertainment.

You could charge £1 a go and use the money to towards funding prizes for the Model Concours fun categories mentioned on earlier thread?

Sorry, - second thoughts scrap that idea, checking out 100 wedges will take too long

Maybe we could set the meter up by the gate as people leave for the run, and give a prize for the loudest later on.

Check out Mike's PDF of the event details .. I'm bringing it along for a 'noise competetion' ..

If nothing else - at least people will know how loud their car is for a track day.

The meter can use either A or C Weighting .. not that I really care.

LOL, the old engine would happily rev to 6500, but at times when I was feeling a little more mechanical sympathy I would change up @ 5000.
