Mille Miglia 2016

Hi everyone, I'm new to pistonheads and wondering if anyone can give me any advice about spectating along the route of the Mille Miglia. I'm fortunate enough to be in Italy near the futa pass on May 21st this year. Is it worth spending time sat waiting somewhere along the route or will the cars be so far apart this is not really practical, or will the cars be coming through close together in a short timespan. I'm not sure of the format so any help would be fantastic preferably from somebody who has followed the race at first hand. Also do you really have to view at a start/finish point to catch all the glamour of the event because this would make it difficult for me due to time constraints. Many thanks

Hi,

I managed to watched all the cars pass through the timing point at Sirmione in 2014 and that is just 45 mins from the start in Brescia. It was fantastic to see the pre events and all the cars pass through in relatively quick succession. There was really good access to capture the event in relative comfort as well. Sorry can't advise on any other vantage point along the route but it was definitely worth taking the time to watch it.

If you plan on watching on the route the cars will pass over a couple of hours. Sometimes 10-20 bunched together with a few minutes between.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching last year. Stayed in Brescia. Best part was enjoying a number of beers the day before the start whilst all the cars gathered for the sealing ceremony. As they filter in to Piazza Della Loggia you can get a good close look at most of them. Stunning machines.

Watching it is now ticked off my bucket list, but want to navigate on it one day now!

We followed it in 2014 and are going to again this year - the atmosphere in Brescia is amazing before the off, and following the start we went to the Sirmione checkpoint and saw them later north of Firenze. This year we will be in Brescia before the start, then Sirmione and subsequently near Parma and then Bergamo. Just be aware that the route mapping can be fairly 'fluid' in an italian stylee so even papers published that week won't necessarily have the final route.

It's an amazing spectacle, and those who join in for the heck of it are just as entertaining to watch as some of the competitors. I'd go every year, but OH says that's excessive!

as someone who has taken part in the MM the last 4 years I can first hand tell you that the experience is amazing, its a museum of working cars, their owners don't want to just look at these amazing machines, these cars are used and tested... pushed to their breaking point (well over 1000 miles in some cars 90+ years old) and driven.
if you get the chance to come along, you will not be let down by the quality of cars on show, drive along with a group of cars (just don't get in the way!) and enjoy the sights of Italy.
