I compete in the Scottish Speed events in the Mod sports class on slicks since 2011.

The last two years I've been suffering from drive shaft and diff breakages which seems to be owing to play in the driveline which results in the drive coming in with a bang on starts and some gearchanges. It is IRS & has Freelander diff with a Quaife ATB.

The drive shafts, ATB and diff have all now been replaced or checked. The current two piece prop shaft is OK. It has a rubber doughnut type connection at the engine flange.
Therefore the only play left to find seemed to be in the gearbox/engine.

The engine has been split and I understand that there is lash coming from the space between the engagement dogs on the gears which have much more clearance than on a car box. I also have been told that this is normal.
There is no excessive play in the clutch which seems OK. The diff may be a little tighter now but not much.

The car was built in 2005 and has won the hillclimb mod sports championship twice with the previous owner and once by myself with no problems until 2014 when a drive shaft went on the start line and then another and the crown wheel in 2015.

Do you think fitting a TRT propshaft would help fix this problem? I'm not an engineer and am a bit in the dark as to what to do next. It's strange that the car was fine for many years but now problems occur.

Many thanks

John

A TRT propshaft should help things. In terms of cause, did you change the clutch plates/springs a couple of years ago by any chance, or have you fitted wider tyres or softer tread compound?

Have you looked at the hubs? The previous owner of my fury beefed up the hubs as he felt they were flexing

Thanks Guys,

The clutch and tyres are the same as always and the hubs are good and a good fit on the splines. Cars back together now and Ricky said he felt the ATB could be a bit tighter now. I'll see when I try it out in better weather.

If no good I may try a TRT shaft.

Possibly worth replacing the doughnut with a universal jointed prop Shaft? That's what I did when my doughnut let go...
