I've got a fair bit if kit in my office with multiple 8-way power extension leads. Computers left on permanently, printers, fax machines, TV, monitors, powered speakers, etc, etc ...

... bit concerned that a short may lead to a fire and have thought about having a fire extinguisher or two to hand. Any idea what type, size and recommendations as to where to get one from? It's a home office so don't need a visit, just want to be able to order on-line. Cheers.

There used to be gas extinguishers specifically for computers, blue coloured always saw them in server rooms, cant remember the gas but they have now been made illegal.

Its their replacement that you want.

I'm not much help really...

You need a CO2 extinguisher - foam and water will only add to the problem if it's an electrical fire!

Halon, Its a CFC so it illegal to MAKE it but you can still buy the extinguishers and its not illegal to use it.

I think Halogen(sp?) gas is the stuff you need for electrical fires. Failing that, powder ones are good for pretty much anything but make a hell of a mess that takes ages to get rid of!

Edit: Halon is the stuff! More info here:

The problem with powder extinguishers is that material that was on fire can still smoulder underneath the powder - it just starves it of o2

We have Carbon Dioxide and Water

Stop the fire with the carbon dioxide - cut the power and finish it off with water.

(Maybe I'm talking bks)

Halon is great... but I wouldn't want to be around when it goes off!!!

I've got a halon extinguisher in the car, we had an extinguisher rep that lived down the road, so I managed to get him to colour code a bottle for me..

In one of the offices I used to look after we had a halon system for the IT room... The room had been made smaller using a partition, but the halon system was still prepped for the original room size..

One afternoon whilst bored, we calculated that it would most probably blow the roof off if it was activated

Halon's brilliant at putting fires out. But if you use it in an unvented space, it's also brilliant at extinguishing the user.

Why not pop down to your local fire station? They'll be glad to help give some advice.

You need a CO2 extinguisher. I'd also think an "emergency stop" button might not be a bad idea to kill the power. BTW, a hand-held extinguisher will only put out a very small fire - when I did my fire course at work, the advice was "run away, call the Fire Brigade". You certainly don't want to tackle an established fire with a hand-held extinguisher.

Oh, and I have a smoke detector in my study where all the computers are, too.

Thats what we've got in our server room. Good stuff by all accounts. You just don't want to get stuck in there when it goes off!

Are you still allowed to have that in server rooms now? I was sure it was banned and you had to decommission them.

Inergen or similar gas mixes are de rigeur now. You still don't want to be in a room when they go off though - blown ear drums and worse can ensue.

Just happen to have spent last weekend doing commissioning tests in a d/c. If you ever get asked to do this, run away quicker than if there was a fire!

Hmm, it doesn't sound like many bother for small/home offices? I seem to live in this office, so I was thinking that if something shorted and started a fire, I wanted something to hand to put it out. I accept that if I'm wakened in the night, then a sharp exit is called for.

Read up a bit on Halon; think it might be best to avoid ...

It looks like a CO2 extinguisher is the one to go for; any online suppliers recommended?

I do intend to put a smoke alarm in the office as well.
