Does any one know the specification part number etc of the ZF power steering pump, want to get a seal kit to give mine an overhaul whilst changing my rack.

I think it came off a Peugeot 605 Diesel, if that helps.

From my handy alternative parts list smile

"If power steering fails, a substitute electric pump can be used from a Citroen Saxo. Apparently the hoses fit perfectly. The Tuscan & T350 use this too. The pump takes about 30A so substantial wiring and relay are required. This modification can be a cheaper alternative fix if the woodruff key on the pump drive shaft breaks (a known problem with pre-98 cars). Replacing the woodruff key and/or shaft means engine removal... Thanks to Jools for his wisdom on this !"

I went the electric pump route the pump cost £15 off eBay and has worked faultlessly for a few years now.

The original pump weighs about half pound and is smaller than an orange, the electric pump is a monster.

Changing the PS Woodruff key is not an engine out job, it is only if the entire auxiliary shaft fails (causing oil and water pumps to fail) that you are in real trouble.

Nothing wrong with my pump just as I'm putting a new rack in I thought might as well replace all the seals in the pump to give the new rack the best start to its life possible. That plus putting a filter inline with ththe hydraulics to help long term.

Quite. It also makes it very awkward to get the panel out with the reservoir neck sticking through it, and suitable gauge cabling to the battery makes the scuttle panel a poor fit too.

I hate it, frankly, and when my body-off restoration happens the Saxo pump will be going in a skip and the car put back the way it should be.

That's very interesting Jamie, thanks for the heads up and both sides of the story regarding the downsides of the Saco conversion over standard. Until now thought it was the best solution and was just waiting to get one and put one in. Now I've read I think I'll be waiting and my original stays as it is wink

That depends which pump you fit.

I used one with a remote reservoir so with the front panel in place it look completely standard using the original reservoir.

I switched mine from the bulkier separate pump to the integrated one. I guess with a later panel it wouldn't work, but it's a very good fit on mine. Old PAS reservoir is now the new washer bottle smile
