As per the title, there has recently been a spate of thefts in Kent and a bit of Essex and S.E. London. They've been happening since the summer and seem to particularly focused on American classics and classic Fords. I'd be very surprised if they're not linked. It would be a very good idea for people in Kent to start removing their HT leads whenever they leave their cars unattended.

  • 1980 Ford Cortina Mk. V estate (light green, reg. MKN 841W) stolen from West Norwood, London SE27 on 6th June
  • 1949 Ford F-1 pick-up (red oxide/gloss black) stolen late July/early August from St. Osyth, Essex
  • Ford Transit Mk. I motorhome (light blue, reg. MKR 156F) stolen 11th September from Wrotham, Kent
  • 1949 Ford F-1 pick-up (red, reg. 797 YUS) stolen from Chelmsford, Essex on 15th October, possibly sighted at Tilbury Docks
  • Ford Thames 400E motorhome (light green and white, reg. 777 STA) stolen from Ditton, Kent on 19th December
  • Ford Cortina Mk. III (brown, reg. LVB 173K) stolen from Rochester, Kent on 2nd January
  • 1970 Dodge Coronet (black with green stripes, reg. SKK 274H) stolen from Sheppey, Kent on 4th January, reportedly seen in Maidstone, feared stolen for banger racing
I'm also aware of a Pontiac Trans Am 'KITT' clone being stolen from the Brands Hatch American Speedfest and a '56 Chevy being stolen from the Goodwood FoS, but as these were at events I suspect they may have been unrelated and opportunist.

Obviously please keep a lookout for any of the above and report findings to the police.

Add to that a red mk5 Cortina Crusader XPK871Y from Chatham on 2nd January 2016 & bronze mk3 Cortina 1300L HCR296L from Camberwell on 5th January 2016.

The 2 stolen on the 2nd January (Brown mk3 LVB173K & Red Crusader XPK871Y) were reportedly stolen within an hour of each other. Two Cortina's were spotted on the back of a lorry heading towards Dartford Crossing.

Sad to hear about the Coronet, it's a well known vehicle on the circuit in this area.

Considering how rare the car is, it's obviously been stolen to order. I can only imagine it will be shipped abroad or dumped, even been broken for spares that is surely going to be too hot to handle.

there is a big 'Cortina only' banger racing meet coming up, so its probably safe to assume that the reason so many cortinas are vanishing around kent at the moment is that the honest banger racers are 'collecting' the required cars for this event.........

95 cars booked in already and it's only January.

In October 2013 they had an all Granada meeting and it was huge, over 200 cars

The text below was posted on the Ovalchat forum a few days back - requesting that the promoter (PRI) monitor the sourcing of the vehicles. Some of the posts that follow suggest that the Police (and owners) will be attending the event at the Arena Essex to try and identify cars. Some interesting posts are made where established contributors don't hesitate to state that cars are being stolen for the meeting.

Since no one has bought the issue up, i am just going to post here for the promoters of this event to see.

In recent months there has been a disproportionate number of thefts of Ford Cortinas from a variety of locations, unfortunately it appears that there is a strong correlation between this spate of thefts and the All Cortina meeting you will be hosting.

I therefore ask, What will PRI staff be doing to ensure that these stolen cars will not turn up at this meeting? Given the link between the thefts and this meeting, your position as promoter is essential to ensure that this meeting produces a positive reputation for the banger racing community, particularly given the high profile nature of the event.

Which begs the further question. Will you be providing safeguards for external groups such as classic car owners by inviting the authorities to this meeting to ensure that the cars present were legally acquired? since classic car enthusiasts in particular are one of the most influential groups to the overall perception of the sport.

I just saw that mentioned on Twitter. I know a few people in the Whitstable/Tankerton/Herne Bay area so I'll ask them to keep a look out (not that I expect it'll still be in the area).

Blue Ford Thames 7cwt van, 355HLU, Tankerton, Kent 25/01/16

Blue Thames 307E 7cwt van (van version of Ford Anglia 105E) registration number 355HLU was stolen from its elderly owner’s driveway in Tankerton, Kent overnight of 25th/26th January 2016. The car was taken from behind a locked set of gates. The vehicle has the chassis number (supplied by the owner) H31 D0 31 001. The blue paint was far from immaculate, it had faded giving it a patinated look. Both front wings have been filled by the headlamps and all the doors were showing signs of rust.
The van has no battery tray under the bonnet & the van features its original van seats which are both worn.
The car has been owned by its 84 year old owner since 1978, it was his pride and joy which he used to use to take his wife to the local shops, unfortunately she died just before Christmas, so in just over a month he’s lost 2 things that were special to him!
There is a reward on offer for its safe return and prosecution of those responsible for stealing it.

My 1974 celica was stolen back in june, just after the Bromley pagent. From coney hall, bromley kent.

I believe by the same gang probably. Dragged up the road by another car. It had just had a expensive and time consuming engine build to a high standard on an original motor.

I hope these people are found and convicted.
