Over Speed Limit, Claiming On Telematics Policy?
Discussion
Hello!
Confused.com has tempted me with a cheap telematics policy. Not keen on having a black box but there we go.
If i have an accident, and the box says i was doing for example 50 on a 40 speed limit - are they going to try and get out of the payout?

- Disclaimer - i'm not intending on speeding so should not matter, but good to know either way

Or, rather more to the point, what do the written policy Ts & Cs say?
As you both know, i have neither asked or read the Ts and Cs...Points well made

I thought these insurance policies with the black box are mainly targeted at 17 and 18 year olds that are learning to drive or just passed their test.
It may be that they are available for any driver but the only positives I can think of is that it may make you drive more carefully and I think is a sort of Sat Nav.The negatives are they can monitor your driving so as the OP says may cause problems regarding speeding convictiona and accidents. Also I understand they text your phone to congratulate you on good driving and also give you a b
king for poor driving and too much of that and they can increse your premiums or cancel your policy.
OP looking at your present car and history would have thought you could get a better and cheaper deal without a black box.My 18 year old son had cheaper policies without a black box before and after passing his test.

No this can't be the case. Because Loon def stated a couple a years ago that this would not happen for 'older' drivers and it would only EVER be for the young fools who have just passed their test because they need to be regulated. It may be that they are available for any driver but the only positives I can think of is that it may make you drive more carefully and I think is a sort of Sat Nav.The negatives are they can monitor your driving
So I'm assuming your making this up

All technology has a downside. What happens when a telematics fitted car is in for a service and the local spanner monkey decides to take it for a 'test drive' and pushes the envelope on the local B roads? Will the young owner then be penalised by his/her insurer?
Doubt it. From what I've seen, it doesn't mark you down for one-off incidents. It averages your scores quarterly. So you would only be penalised if the car is driven by a plank on a regular basis. And, in the case of Hastings Direct, the only "penalty" seems to be that they'll give you a higher quote the following year, based more closely on your risk profile. In my daughter's case her premium went down by 50% after Year 1 and then another £200 the following year.

First they came for the 17/18 year olds, and I did not speak out—Because I was not a 17/18 year old.
Then they came for the penalty points-holders, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a penalty points-holder.
Then they came for the claimants, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a claimant.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
I believe this is known as the slippery slope, the camel's nose under the tent-flap, the thin end of the wedge, etc... We will all be buying cars that include the black box built-in eventually, whether we like it or not. Anyone wanting insurance without a black box will first be charged through the nose, then eventually forced by law to have one. I'm no conspiracy theorist, I just can't see this not eventually being the norm. It will allow not only monitoring of driving style but tracking of road use for taxation/toll purposes and probably speed limit enforcement too.

Melodrama and loss of proportion? Just a tad.
I seem to have renewed two policies in the last couple of months, neither on a black box, total of ~£200 in premiums. Yes, both annual premiums added together. Now, do YOU think it likely that anybody is going to be arsed to do any black box demanding on that? Or, even, the slightest bit of premium intervention as a result of the three flat seconds of results-analysis that they won't be doing?

A small amount of sarcasm (re-imaginings of that quote being an internet staple) and a bit of crystal ball gazing. No proportion necessary, I even said in my own post that I am no conspiracy theorist.
To be clear, what I did suggest was that this will happen "eventually", not "right now". I too have insurance, in my case on three cars, with none of this black-box nonsense required. I suspect that neither of us are 17/18, so right now are unlikely to be offered a black-box, nor given our risk profile relative to a 17/18 year old, are the savings in premium sufficient to nudge us towards one. In my re-imagined quote above, I suspect that we are still at the first line.
In any business, the cost of providing a service often bears no relation to the price charged to the end-consumer, so "arsed" will most definitely come into it if money can be made. That money doesn't necessarily have to be your premiums though. Let's say that usage based road charging came to pass, requiring similar black box functionality. Do you think insurance companies would not seek to gain access to that data to mitigate their own risk expousre? Of course they would. There are many ways this could come to happen, especially in our connected world. Lets see where we are in a decade or two though.

Now that would be funny. Maybe someone could do one of those Hitler in his bunker videos with hilarious subtitles too.

Loads of people said that in 1995, when Aviva launched the first Black Box policy. So it is now 2 decades since...and where are we exactly? Still as it was then, a niche product for a small minority. And not even compulsory for them.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
