Stupid question?
Discussion
Not stupid at all.
I think the traditional September start to the next model year, might be to make a fresh start after the summer holiday production stop.
Had not heard of MY2006.5 before (mentioned by Neil), but I don't know much about the 4.3 changes.
First registration dates do not always fit with model years. The extreme example of this was during 2009, when some MY2008 cars were still unsold in the summer of 2009.
The only fraction model year I knew was MY2012.25, when specification changes were introduced later than the usual September.

Potentially stupid question coming up...when did the 2007MY on the v8v start? Was it 2007, or a bit earlier? Sorry guys, I don't own "the book" and my best googling has found nothing
Trying to work out what MY an August 2006 registered car is.
Thanks!
It's worth spending £20 when your spending 000's.. it's all in there....honest Trying to work out what MY an August 2006 registered car is.
Thanks!
but then again I'm biased
As mentioned you can't tell the model from when the car was registered, it's when it was built - just ask for the VIN number of the car you are considering, the 10th digit is the model year, so a 2007MY would have a 7 as the 10th digit, 2008 - 8, 09 - 9, then it changed to A for 2010, then onward 11-B, etc.
Knowing the specifications by model year also helps you visually pick out likely 07MY cars, the new style seats for example.
Best of luck finding your new Aston
