Porsche 997.1 to daily or not to daily that is the question.

So this is the issues: comments very welcome, many thanks .....
So i am wondering whether i should daily my 997.1 C2s, in short the reasons for it is that its a lovely car to drive etc etc and my drive is only 40 miles round trip so not too bad, although not that interesting motorways etc.
At present i use the diesel box, (X5) but its all a bit rubbish and have started using the 997.1 more and more......but the main draw back is the mileage i will put on, although maybe this is not too much of an issue and the value is failing anyway, and of course the engine issues and the 997.1 being a bit fragile so maybe driving in traffic a lot is less than ideal and at the moment it is in perfect 100% condition with original paint etc
Option B would be to keep the 997.1 and buy a boxster or even a 924, and i have seen a nice 2.5 boxster, maybe a 924 is a bit old as a daily but for less than £5k still not a bad option....
Thoughts please........

I'd take a Boxster every time over a 924 and maybe just use the 7.1 a few days a week. I drive my 997TT a total of 30 miles round trip a day. Doesn't get old. I reason I bought it to drive it, and so it's now my only taxed and running car. It still feels special every moment.
Plus I get to please people like the random Italian tourist who knocked on the window when stopped at Parliament Square and asked me to rev it

So to progress this i went and looked at a 2.5 early boxster today, i drove an hour there in the 997, thinking the boxster would feel a bit rubbish when i test drove that after. The car was a v low (40k) mileage example and was in AA1 condition, my only reservation would have been the long gap (4 years) between a couple of the services, but the car was doing low miles but none the less not ideal.
The boxster was great, different than the 997 and not at all comparable but in a different way v v nice, i really liked the whole deal part from two things.....is the gearbox on the boxster normally that long?, i know it didn't have a short shift kit, but my my it is some length of throw, and then the suspension, although it did not make any strange noises, it was a little soft for my liking but maybe thats just the change from the 997.
So Still thinking..........and also the boxster was 6.5k which i thought was a little rich, but then again maybe early ones with low miles are about there??

I don't really understand this... the 2.5 Boxster will cost just as much or more to run as the 997 as it will be a lot older as parts wear out as I have found out. Why buy an expensive 997 and not drive it if it's just 40 miles a day. If you're that bothered about engine issues the 2.5 isn't exempt from that and a lower mileage one is more of a risk. And £6.5k seems a lot when 987 2.7 start at £10k. Surely you'd be better off buying a Gen 2 987 or 997 as sole car and just enjoying it without the engine risk.

I saw a white 2.5 manual with sand interior take a while to sell at £7k in 2013, then (it had to be the same car) reappear last year and sell instantly for £5k. It seemed to have picked up a scrape, so the car you saw was relatively fairly priced imho.I have winter tyres fitted to the GT3, but must confess i do have other options for the days where i just want to listen to some music on a motorway slog.
My issue is i can't keep a car for 'special' occasions. I don't understand how people save them exclusively for Sundays. When it's Sunny. After it's been cleaned.
I wouldn't over think it, use both cars and don't feel guilty when you fancy taking the 911 into work - enjoy it!

What a great daily your 97 will make, imo it's not "special" or fragile enough to be sat in a garage only to be run on a nice summers day when time permits and as already mentioned I really can't see the point in buying a Boxster as a cheap car for the commute, surely something like a diesel Golf would better serve, or an X5

thanks for all the comments................
So I was never planning to keep the 997 for hay days and holidays more just not driving it everyday and having something else apart from the X5, which i know is all a bit greedy but there we go, and i like taking cars apart and fiddling so sometimes the 997 is out of action for a while, going to change the exhaust over next couple of weeks, but it always takes longer than i think.
But yes i think the summary is that if i did buy a boxster, which by the way i have been super impressed with after nano'ing them for years, i would end up trying to upgrade the suspension, gear change and so and so on, but i think set up right they would be a great ! and just in a different way to the 997, which is more about controlling the power, as opposed to a boxster which is about trying to get some power :-), just kidding
So the summary is new exhaust, brake fluid change etc etc and then use it more....although if anybody is interested this is the boxster i saw which really was a nice example..... ermmmm how about an early 996.....

if you're worried about engine failure in a 997 an early 996 isn't going to really help that much.
How about a Z4 3.0si as a daily, far less worry and still a decent chassis. Not got the dynmics of the Pork but you could get a roadster to smoke about in in the summer with the roof off keeping miles off the 997, you get much newer and less worrysome car for the money than a Boxster. A 2.5 Boxster is getting on for 20 years old and based on experience is likely to give you £1k-£2k of bills per year

Thanks for your response, the 996 was joke (in part) but yes the 3.0 bmw engine is a nice one, had a 330i coupe and was really very nice....always fancy a e46 M3, thing that puts me off is they are all a bit heavy, haven't really looked at z4, remember z4m were getting near to £10k a while ago, probably more now....I think in that area the m3 e46 has got to be the bargain now for around £8k, although hard to get a decent one. Maintenance is not really an issue as do most of it myself apart from the token service to keep the record up......for me the issue is that they have to be pre ish 2005/06 or else all cars seem to get a bit plastic and LED'ee (technical term you understand)
I disagree with most people on this. I don't think that driving a really fun car every day is a good idea. A 911, or a boxster for that matter, is something that should be enjoyed on occasion. Any car that you drive everyday becomes ordinary after a while.
You want to really enjoy your 911? Drive a 'normal' car from Monday to Friday, then get on it on Saturday. It will never be more fun.

It doesn't have to be a bad car. My daily driver is a Mini Cooper S. However, my 997S is in a different enough league that at weekends I enjoy it all the more.Gassing Station | 911/Carrera GT | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
