MEACO DD8L Dehumidifier and/or Carcoon?
Discussion
I have a 3 car garage (150 cm) and need to protect the TR3a over the winter, whilst I am away for 3 months.
In my area, outside temperatures can easily drop to zero or low digits.
It is a detached block built garage and not insulated, but is dry and not too drafty.
I am looking at the MEACO DD8L Dehumidifier and a Carcoon/Cair-o-port - used together.
Does anyone have experience of using both systems?
Am I better off using the dehumidifier outside the carcoon to stop the tools and everything else in the garage rusting, or would it work more efficiently/cheaper if used inside the carcoon?
As the dehumidifier gives off heat, would it cause issues inside the carcoon?
Maybe silly questions, but I am a car enthusiast and not a nuclear physicist!
Any comments would be appreciated. - Especially sensible ones!
Cheers

Is is really that necessary?
What has happened in previous years? Has the car rusted away? I bet it hasn't ...
If the garage is damp, use a dehumidifier. If it's not, then don't. My garage is single skin brick, and not damp in the slightest ... and the temp gets pretty low.
Maybe think about taking it to a proper classic storage facility for three months ... ?

Yes I run a Meaco Junior 8 Litre Dehumidifier DD8LJ (no carcoon, just the whole space)
Works well in low temps, slightly heats the return air and once on switches on and off as it sees fit to maintain the desired setting (even in a powercut it will restart in the same setting once power is restored). As it can run a permenant drain there is no need to keep emptying the collector either.
In my double garage, on its lowest settings, humidity sits at aroud 50%RH (next setting up it will sit at 40%RH). No need for special electrics either as it plugs into a normal 13A 3 pin socket.

Thanks guys.
It does sound a bit like 'overkill' but I was not sure if the dehumidifier would cope with 150 cubic meters garage.
The previous owner only used a dehumidifier, but that was in an insulated single garage.
If it was an ordinary car, I would not be so concerned, but I have just bought this and it is a 38 time concours winner...........

I use a DD8L at home when it's too wet to put washing outside. It noticeably raises the temperature of the room by about 10C.
If you're away, then you will probably want to have a hose leading to a drain from the dehumidifier or the reservoir will fill up within about 8 hours and stop working.

Fair play then VR, I'd be wrapping it in not only cotton wool, but velvet as well! It does sound a bit like 'overkill' but I was not sure if the dehumidifier would cope with 150 cubic meters garage.

From a well known Dutch enthusiast?.It does sound a bit like 'overkill' but I was not sure if the dehumidifier would cope with 150 cubic meters garage.

If so, I've seen that car "in the metal" and it is truly gorgeous.
I have a draughty, wooden garage with concrete floor. My E-type (concours winner 2014) sits in a Carcoon with two one kilo silica bags over the winter and not one speck of damp or rust. On the other hand the other car, with an alloy body so no real problem, is damp to the touch sometimes. I deal with that one by applying from time to time WD40 under the bonnet.
ETA If I was buying today, it would be the Veloce framed model. It's a pain to put the car away so I delay it as long as possible since once in it doesn't come out until the spring. At least with the Veloce you can drive in and out as you wish.

I used this exact combination - same Meaco and Carcoon - in my open fronted barn / garage for my 1970 911.
Works brilliantly.
Don't set Meaco too low humidity wise and it only needs emptying once every 5 days or so.
Carcoon alone did not do anything for humidity - as you would expect - and floor was often wet on damp cool days. Still better on the floor than on the car...

without looking if that meako is the dessicant type or refrigerant based, ive had 5 years trouble free with my meako rotary dessicant unit. my garage is almost a double, i sealed up a load of gaps to make it easier to control and the humidity sits at 50-60% constantly on the mid setting. touch wood no rust so far. constant drain option with a hose running outside to a drain, saves emptying.
ive also had a carcoon, which was ok, but a bit more faff in and out/zipping up etc other than the actual winter months when the car didnt move.

Thanks for all the extra comments.
Does anyone know of any 'deals' on the carcoon?
I have been offered 10% off the 'cair-o-port' through the TR Register.
From all the other threads on the subject, the carcoon veloce and cair-o-port seem to be equally as good and easy to use as each other...................unless you know otherwise?
